Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application tiled February 26, 1908. Serial No. '417,954.
To all who-m fit may concern:
Be it. known that I, Jessen Cairn-1n, a citizen of the Vnited States, residing at Captiva, in the county of Lee and'State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following` is a specification.
This invention relates to safety envelops, the object of the invention being to provide an envelop which, when sealed.l will provide unusual strength in connection with the flaps and `guard against the fraudulent opening of the envelop or rather revealing' the fact that an attempt has been made to open the envelop to gain. access to the contents thereof.
With the above leneral object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and`arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be described, illustrated and .elaiuietl In the act-onipan'ving drawing':--l"i;ure l is a plan view of the envelop before beingfolded. looking" toward the inner face thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the envelop partially folded or unsealed. Fig'. 2i is a plan view ot the envelop completely folded and sealed.
'l'he envelop comprises a body or front portion l two oppositely located end flaps 2 and Il. a bottoni tlap -l and a sealing` [lap 5.
The bottom flap l is provided with a projecting center tab t' and loosely projecting end tabs T and S. rl`he end flaps 2 and El are provided lwith transverse, slits 9 and l() ailapted when folded upon each other to receive .the e'idttahs Ty and s, and said end llapszt're further provided with longitudinal slits l1 and l2' adapted 'when folded upon each other to receive a center tab t'. 'l`he .-ealin 1lap 5 is also provided with a slit lil adapted when folded upon the end Aflaps 2 and f3 to receive the center tab t5. i
()ne of the end flaps is lg'nnnned as shown at l-l. the oblique etlu'es'ol1 the bottoni flap are also uunnnedon their inner side as shown at. 1.',- and the sealing' flap is gnnnned along its oblique edges in the usual manner as indicated at 16.
The end tlap 2 is first. folded inward on the dotted folding'ilinesl shown in Fig. 1, after which the remaining end fiap is folded upon the other end flap and secured thereto by the gummed surface lJf. The sealing flap 5 is then folded inward upon the end flaps, the vummed edge thereof being moistened so'as to cause the flap 5 to adhere tothe end flaps 2 and 3. and folded inward upon the sealing flap 5 and the tabs (3, 'i' and 8 which are gummed upon their outer faces as shown in Fig. 2 are `lits in the flaps 2, 25 and 5 and caused to adhere b v pressure to the inner surfaces of the llaps. 2, 2S and 5. lt will be found practica/ily impossible v to vope-n such an envelop without giving visual notice of the faet that such an attempt has been made. This makes the envelop safe in transportation and adds materially to the strength of the connection between the various flaps of the envelop as a whole. f
llavinu` thus deseribed the'invention', what is claimed as new, isz- A safety envelop comprising a body, end llaps provided with longitudinal and transverse slits7 a sealintgy flap provided with a slit which registers with the longitudinal slits in the end flaps, and a bottom flap provided with a gunnned center tab and directions laterally away from the center tab` said center and end tabs being adapted when said bottom llap is folded to be inserted through the slits in the sealing flap and end llaps and to adhere to the inner survl'aees ot' said flaps` substantially as described. ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. .0
