To clima@ concern:
Be knvf'vnthat TI, WILLIAM P. BALLARD, a citizeny of the United States,.residing at AVVhitesville, in the county of Boone and State oWest Virginia, have invented certain vnew anduseful Improvements in Envelops, .of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to envelops.
`One object is to provide an envelop that cannot be opened Without detection.
Another 'object resides in the provision of an envelop embodying two separate and distinct pockets.
With the above and other objects in view the pre'sent invention consists in the 1combinat-ion and arrangement of parts hereinafter k'lescribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
n the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which my envelop 1s formed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the envelop partly folded. Fig. 3,'is a plan View of the rear of the envelop with all except one of the sealing flaps sealed. `Fig. 4 is asectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the envelop in its sealed condition. Fign is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference char aoter 1 indicates the front or address` side of my improved envelop and 2 the back thereof, the numeral 3 indicating a division or )artition member provided with a sealing ap 4. The front or address sido of the envelop is provided with the sealing flaps 5A and 6 along' its opposite longitudinal edges and a sealing Hap 7 along its outer ond, said flaps carrying dry adhesive substance., as shown.
To convert the blank shown in Fig. l into an envelop, the p artition member 3 is folded along theline` a. upon the inner face of the back 2. The back 2 and partition member 3 are then folded along the line b against the inner face ol' the front or address sido of the envelop, with tho llap 4 of the partition niember'extended to lie against the flap 5. The flap 7-is then scaled io the outer face ol the back 2, and the flap` subsequently sealed to said back, providing an envelop having tw'o pockets, 8 and 9, one upon each side of said partition member. The [lap 4 of the partition member seals the pocket 8, While y, the flap 5 seals the pocket 9.
ne flap 4 is smaller than the flap 5 and Specification of Lettera Patent. i Application rlledJune 3, 1907. Serial No. 376,975.
Patented Aug. 11, 1903.
when a letter c is placed Within the pocket 8 it may be sealed therein by the iiap 4 independently of whether the larger flap 5 is secured to the back of the envelop. The
`larger Hap may be sealed to the bach 0f the envelop with or wit'hout a letter d4 in the pocket 9, and when sealed covers the smaller ap 4 and positively prevents access to the pocket 8 unless both fla s 4 and 5 are unsealed or severed from t e body of the envelop or without otherwise. tearing the envelop to such an extent as to indicate that the envelop has been opened or tampered with by an unauthorized person.. The flaps v5 and 6 overlap when the envelop Aissealed,
as shown in Fi 6.
As shown ingFig. 5 the iaps 5 and 6 overlap a part of the flap 7, and I might state that the same form of envelo as that shown and described herein could e embodied in a legal sized envelop without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It willbe noted that two inde endent enveloppockets are produced,- eac accessible without reference to the other, and the twoA pockets provided with one common closure at one end, namely the end closure flap 7. The two pocket envelop is thus produced from a single sheet of relatively small size and with the minimum of waste, as there is no useless overlap ings or false portions.
What is claimed) is z;-
An envelop comprising a front portion and a back portion with a partition portion folded between them to provide two independently accessible pockets with the partition portion forming the dividing means between the pockets and having a sealing flap said front portion havingv a relatively large sealing flap folded. over said partition sea ing flap and 4projecting beyond tne saine, and saidfront ortion. havin@ a closure liep at one edge foldied over said back ila and a closure flap at' one end folded over t e back llap and forming an end closureto both of said pockets, and said partition portion having arelatively smallsealing flap foldable over the back portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
