SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,832, dated January'175l1899. A

- hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to. which 'it appertains to make and'use' the same.

My invention relates to certain ,new and useful improvements in desk-calendars, and has for its object to produce a calendar which may be used as a diary by providing a compartment in which the calendar-sheets containing notes may be filed as they are torn od and stored for futurereference.

A further object is to so arrange the .parts- Aof the device as to make'the filed sheetsreadily` accessible, Yso that any desired sheet may be withdrawn and replaced without disturbing the others. g

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in thenovel details of construction and combination of parts to be more fully described in the following speoiiication and clearly set forth in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inwhich similarletters of reference indicate likeparts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved calendar. Fig. 2' is a central section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a section with the pad removed, showing the compartment opened.

In the drawings, a denotes a vrectangular Wedg'ehaped body having hinged thereto at a short distance above its lower end a front b, adapted to close upon the body a toform a compartment therein. Atop cl is hinged to the upper end yof the body and when closed completes the compartment before referred to. yA spring e is secured to the top d by meansof a pin f and projectsv downward to bear against the sheets that are contained within the compartment. ` In use the sheets are -torn from the pad as usual but instead of being thrown away they are placed in regular Order within the compartment, where they are retained in an upright position bythe spring e and are pre- Vented from slipping out by the stripl of the body. W'hen itis desired to refer to the notes made on a given date,,the front and top are opened and the sheets separated at fthe: date required,kwhen the top is closed, whereby the spring e retains a portion of the sheets, While the others bend forward. ,Now the sheet desired may be removed and consuited without disturbing the others, and

vwhen-it is finished with its proper position is indicated by the spring e, thus avoiding a second search through the leaves.

In 'a diary coinpartment-c'alendar, the combination of a holder adapted to receive the detached pad-rsheets andcomprising in its constructionl a' back wall, side walls and a bottom wall, afront wall hinged at its lower end and carrying at its upper end a pad-1 clamp and adapted to be opened to insert and removethe sheets, a catch -hlip on the free end of said wall, a top wall hinged to the back wall and 'adapted to be opened and closedto release and clamp the sheets, a keeper-pin thereon adaptedto engage the lip,.on the front wall tohold both. Walls closed, and a clamping-spring secured at one end by the pin to the topwall so as to move therewith, said spring having its free en d arranged'to clampthe loose sheets against the back wall, whereby said sheets are `released and clamped independent of the front wall by opening and closing the .end wall and the end of the spring vadapted to be inserted between the sheets to indicate the place from which a sheet has been removed for as described.
