1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to writing supports and more particularly to a paper clip board especially designed for holding and supporting letter sheets, printed forms and the like when writing thereon.
An object of the invention is to provide a clip board having a rear surface painted black so it can be used as a black board or in the manner of the old fashioned slate.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clip board having a pocket in which may be stored paper, rulers, and other articles needed in the use thereof, a still further object of the invention is to provide a clip board which may be suspended in a vertical position convenient for use or used in a horizontal position on a desk or other like means of support.
With these and other objects in View Which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts are designated by like characters of reference is illustrated a preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the cover plate in open position in dotted lines, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed perspective view of one of the upper corners showing the spring paper retaining means and spring catch.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts the reference character l indicates the im proved clip board forming the subject matter of the present invention comprising a rectangular base board l2 constructed of stiff fibre board, wood or other suitable material the back face of the board being perfectly fiat so as to form a smooth body or support and painted black so it can be used as a black board or like an old fashioned slate.
Extending transversely of the board [2 at its upper end is a block l3 having a screw eye I 4 screwed therein. The screw eye M is adapted to support the board 18 in a vertical position on a wall or the like. In like manner a block I5 having grooves I5 and I! to receive pencils, pens, or
chalk and the like extending transversely of the block l5 and the board I2 at its lower end.
Extending longitudinally of the base board l2 are sides l8 and H! which with blocks l3 and I5 form a pocket 20 which is adapted to hold paper, rulers, and other similar articles needed in connection with the use of the clip board ID.
A hinge plate 2! having a wide upper portion 22 and two depending narrow portions 23 and 24 is positioned in parallel relation to the base board l2 on' the blocks i3 and I5 and sides 23 and 2 5.
A cover plate 25 is hinged at 26 and 21 to hinge plate 2! and forms the supporting surface for paper, letter sheets, printed forms and the like when writing thereon.
The cover plate 25 has a spring clip 28 countersunk in the surface thereof to prevent its interference with the articles placed on the board i0 when the board is in use.
A receiving depression 27 is provided in block IE to receive the upturned end 28 of the spring clip 26. The spring clip keeps the cover plate 25 in fixed position when the cli board I0 is in use and the cover plate may be easily raised by inserting a finger under the upturned end 28 and removing it from the depression 21.
When in position the edges of the cover plate abut the edges of the upper portion 22 and the inner sides of the depending portions 23 and 24 of hinge plate 2| and thus present a smooth writing surface.
There is provided on the hinge plate 2| on the upper portion 22 a paper retaining spring 29 which is adapted to hold the letter sheets, paper, and printed forms or the like firmly on the cover plate 25 when the clip board is in use.
The spring 29 has a depending portion 36 which is adapted to be countersunk into the side 23 of the clip board l0, and a spring clip 3| countersunk into the side 24 of the clip board 10 is adapted to retain the loose end of the paper retaining clip 29 in paper retaining position on the hinge plate 22.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a unitary support the construction of which adapts the upper face to be used as a support when writing and the lower face as a black board.
It will of course be understood that the device may be made in different sizes and shapes and constructed of any suitable material without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A writing support comprising a fiat body having front and rear faces. blocks extending transversely of said body, one of said blocks being provided with article retaining grooves, sides attached to said faces and said blocks, said sides,
faces, and blocks forming a pocket in said body, r
margins and means for retaining said'cover portion in closed position.
