, This invention relates to a book rest and has for its object to support a book at an angle to a desk or table upon which the book would be placed in use, the book being supported at a desired angle to obtain the proper lighting thereon and that the print may be observed from a more comfortable position.

A further object of this invention is to provide a construction'which will be simple and economical in manufacture, one which is easily adjustable to support the book at varying angles, and in which the adjustment is easily made.

A still further object of thisinvention is to provide a construction which may be rested upon a table or other support which will not abrade or injure the table or other supporting surface.

With these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fullydisclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.

It is found convenientrin reading a book to support the same at an angle to the horizontal, which pendent upon the light. and other conditions, and it is usual for persons sitting at a table convenient angle will vary deor desk'to place their hand beneath the book i being read in order to cause the book to as sumethe proper angle, and in order to provide an adjustable support to take the place of the hand and yet support the book at the desired angle, 1 have provided a base and hingedly mounted on the base a book holding member which may be moved to different angular positions relative to the base by a supporting member positioned beneath the same and movable toward and from the hinged connection; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of this invention illustrating the preferred means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished. I

With reference to the drawings, 10 designates a base member which may be formed of any material but which I prefer to form of some relatively light material suchas wood. This base is slotted as at 11 from its rear edge 12 toward its forward edge 13, and intermediate the two edges 12 and 13, I mount the book holding member 14 by meansof hinges 15 secured to one end of the holder member 1a and to the base member 10 by which the. holder member may be moved from a positionlying parallel and flat against the base 10 in which position it may be conveniently carried in the pocket of a user, to a position at varying angles to the base for supporting a book 16 thereon at the desired angle.

The book holder member 1a is supported in various adjusted positions by means of a supporting member 17 which consists of a block having a recess 18 therein and provided with a hole 19 leading from the recess 18 through the block, and in which recess and hole a pin 20 is located to extend through the slot 11. This pin is provided with an enlargement 21 which engages the base at ,22 and 23 on either side of the slot 11 and in the grove 24 to housethe same and prevent contactof'the pin or its enlargement with a table or the like :upon which the base may be positioned. The opposite end of the pin is provided with a head 25 between which and the shoulder 26 formed between the recess 18 and hole 19 a spring 27 is mounted to forcethe supporting member or block 17 into engagemen with the base 10 and at the same time the enlargement 21 into engagement with the under side of the base to hold the supporting member in desired clamped 25 causes the binding engagement heretofore mentioned to retain the-same in adjusted po-- sition.

At the hinged or lower edge of the book holding member 14, I have mounted a flange 28 to support the lower edge of the book 16, and have provided a hole through this iiange having di rent sized bores, th 29 and the larger bore 30, in mounted a. pin 31 substantially'the diameter of the bore 29 having a linger mounted thereon for engagement w th the page of the booln'which finger is resiliently moved into engagement with the page of the book by a spring acting between a shoulder 34, formed between the bores 29 and 30, and the heat 35 of the pin. The finger 32 may thus be easily raised by the handle 36 to permit the turning of the leaves of the book, after which upon release it moves again into engagement with the page to hold tne page and book in position, as desired, upon the book rest.

The forward portion 37 of the base which extends forwardly of the hinges 15 is grooved as at 38 for the reception of a pencil, pen or the like that it may be retained in handy position for use in connection with the use of the device, as desired. 7

In some instances, I may provide an elon gated base l0 and mount two book holding members iland 42 thereon, the members being of different sizes for the use of two books together, such as when a dictionary is used for translating purposes or the like, and upon this elongated base I may also mount an inkw'ell l8 for purposes of convenient use when desired.

Varying forms and shapes of supporting members may be used, and I have shown in Figure 6 a hemisphere l i in which the resilient frictional member is held, as in the block i 17, heretofore mentioned.

The device may be folded and transported in a pocket, the supporting member 17 or 4e: being slipped out of the slot, the members 10 and 14: folded fiat and the entire device then placed in the pocket to be withdrawn and assembled where and when desired.

While I have described certain construction forms which embody the principles of my invention, it is obvious that other desired changes in arrangement may be made within the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

'1. A book rest comprising a basemember,

a book holder member hingedly mounted thereon, said base member having a slot therein extending toward and away from the hinged mounting of said holder member, a supporting member slidably mounted in said slot upon which said holder member may rest in various positions of adjustment, and resiliontfrictional means for holding said supporting member in adjusted position.

2. A book rest comprising a base member havinga slot therein, a-boolz holder member, means for hingedly mounting the book holder member at an angle to said slot, a supporting member upon which said holder member rests, a pin extending through said supporting member and into said slot, and resilient means associated with saidpin for causing frictional engagement of said supporting member and base member.

3. A book rest comprising a base member aving a slot therein, a book holder member, neans for hingedly mounting the book holdr member at an angle to said slot, a supportng member uponwhich said holder member a pin extending through said supportgmember and into said slot, a head on said in, said base having agroove at either side f sai'l slut, an enlargementat the end of said in located in said groove and engaging the either side of said slot, and resilient neans associated with said pin for causing irictional engagement of said supporting member and base member.

4. A book rest comprising a base member having a slot therein, a book holder member, means for hingedly mounting the book holder member at an angle to said slot, a supporting member upon which said holder member rests, a pin extending through said supporting member and into said slot, a head on said pin, said base having agroove at either side of said slot, an enlargement at theend of said pin located in said groove and engaging the base at either side of said slot,.a recess in said supporting member of a size larger than said pin and through which said pin extends, a spring in said recess about said pin engaging the head of the pin'and the bottom of said recess to cause said enlargement and said supporting member to yieldingly frictionally engage said base for holding said supporting member in adj ustcd position in said slot, said yielding frictional engagement being released by pressure upon the head of said pin to permit movement of said supporting member along said base.
