PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. MCINTYRE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CHECK OR VOUCHER BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 523,000, dated July 17,
Application iledApril 26, 1893. Serial No. 471.860. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. MCINTYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement'in Check or Voucher Books, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore books of cheeks, vouchers, receipt and other books have been made with the printed faces of the checks or vouchers toward the front cover and when the book was open the body of superposed sheets of checks or vouchers rested upon the back cover and the sheets were bound between the covers along their left hand edges. These books have the following disadvantages: First, the front cover which is the free cover was always in the way in use; second, the left or free arm in writing had to be placed over this free cover in order to reach and hold down the checks or vouchers being written upon; third, this front or free cover frequently extended over the edge of a desk in use where it was liable to be accidentally moved because in the Way; and, fourth, in manifolding the carbon sheet had to be inserted by the pen holding hand at the most distant point, and fifth the sheets of checks or vouchers being on the right it became necessary to reach over the same in lling out such checks and vouchers commencing at the top of each sheet, and especially with large books of checks or vouchers it was very inconvenient to reach over it in this manner, and the object of my invention is to overcome these objections.
In carrying out my invention I construct my book of checks, vouchers, receipts, and the like, with the printed faces thereof toward the back cover with the sheets bound between the covers along their right hand edges.
When my improved book is open for use the back cover which is the right hand cover is free and the superposed sheets or checks a and vouchers rest upon the front or left hand cover, and in use the back or free right hand cover simply extends beyond the user on the desk where it is out of the way and the checks or vouchers come right in front of the user where both hands can be advantageously used together; the right hand to do the writing and the left hand to hold and steady the said sheets while being written upon, or the right hand to raise the first sheet while the carbon sheet in manifolding is inserted between the sheets by the left hand.
In my improvement the book of checks or vouchers may have stubs at the right hand side of said checks or vouchers, or said checks or vouchers may alternate with manifold record sheets, the sheets in all instances being bound between the hand edges, and the superposed sheets when the book is open for use lie upon the left hand cover directly and unobstructedly in front of the user.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a book of checks and stubs. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a book of checks and manifold record sheets, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 2.
c. represents the front or left hand cover, b the back or right hand cover, and c the flexible back connecting the covers.
d represents the sheets printed upon one face as checks, vouchers, receipts, and the like. These sheets are bound between the covers a b along their right hand edges with their printed faces toward the back cover b.
The sheets d of checks or vouchers may have stubs d a their right hand side and between the chec s or vouchers and the binding at the right hand side, or said sheets d of checks or vouchers may alternate with the manifold record sheets e shown in Fig. 2, said sheets d, or d and e being bound between the covers along their right hand edges and having their printed faces always toward the back or free cover b.
It will thus be seen that when the book of checks or vouchers, receipts, and the like is opened for use, the superposed sheets of checks or vouchers, &c., will lie face up resting upon the front or left hand cover with their printed faces toward the free right hand cover, and that said right hand or free cover will occupy a position upon a desk away from and beyond the user and out of the way thus bringing the sheets of checks or vouchers, &c., conveniently into place in front of the user Where -the arms can rest on the desk and the left handV be employedto hold down the sheets to insert and remove carbon sheets for manifolding and to steady the book while the right hand is writing. In this position the checks, vouchers, and the like are close to the covers along their right IOO user who does not have to reach for them and there are no covers or edges of the book to project beyond the edge of the desk and come in the Way of the occupant of the desk or those moving about it.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a book of checks, vouchers, receipts and. the like, adapted tofbe removed in succession, having their printed faces toward the back cover and bound between the covers along` their right hand edges so as to lie, when opened, with their backsY toward the front cover adjacent to the user, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. n
2. As a new article of manufacture, a book DAVID A. MCINTYRE.
