EDlVARD S. LOlVE, .OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
C'H ECK- BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,089, dated November 23, 1897.
Application filed February 23, 1897. Serial No. 624,701. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. LOWE, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Check-Books;
, and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in check-books, and particularly to those in the nature of sales-check books by means of which a check may be kept on the sale of articles.
The object of the invention is tov so construct a book of this nature that an increased number of checks may be obtained from a single impression.
Another object is to facilitate 'the use of a check-book of this character with respect to the use of the carbon manifolding device.
Another object is to improve the construction of the check-book.
The invention consists in a check-book comprising a series of leaves, each designed to have its end portions folded down over its central portion, said central portion having a lateral extension adapted to be secured to similar portions on adjacent leaves and a duplex carbon introduced between the lower folds of the leaf.
The invention also consists of a leaf having a stub at its edge, portions of the leaf extending beyond the length of the stub, and a duplex carbon attached to the stub.
The invention also consists in a sales-slip foracheck-book adapted to be plurally folded upon itself and a carbon mounted to swing into position between the folds in a direction at right angles with the folding of the slip.
The invention still further consists in such other novel features of construction and com bination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described, andpointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved check-book, showing one of the slips or leaves in position to be folded into checks. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of one of the slips removed from the book.
Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
. Sales-check books of this character are designed for use in keeping arecord of sales in triplicate, by which a check is maintained on the salesman, the cashier, and the bundleclerk. For this purpose it is desirable that duplicate facsimile copies of the purchasers check bemade, and to save time and expense it is important that these duplicates of the original check be made by manifolding from the impression caused by writing said original check. It is also desirable that the carbons and sales-slips be so arranged that no handling of the carbons is necessary, for this soils the salesmans hands and causes the damage of delicate goods thereafter handled by him.
The improved book is formed of a series of sales-slips of convenient size and shape and foldable into the checks 5, 6, and 7 all of which may have the same serial number, as 33, printed thereon. The central slip 6 has a lateral extension 8, which forms a stub, whereby the slips are attached together to form a book. These stubs may be fastened in any suitable manner to a stiff backing or cover to provide a convenient support forthe slips when being written upon. The slips are preferably made of semitransparent paper, and for convenience of separation they may be perforated or scored along the lines on which they are to be folded, as well as between the check 6 and the stub 8.
By means of the clip 9 or in any other suitable manner the carbons 10 and 11 are secured to the stubs 8 8 and swing over onto the central portion of the sales-slip in a direction at right angles with that in which the checks 5 and 7 are foldable. When ready for use, the checks 7 7 are folded down on the upper surfaces of the checks 6 6, the carbons resting upon the back of the uppermost check 7. The salesman in anticipation of the next sale lifts the free edge of the check 7 until the carbons fall into position between thischeck and the check 6. The check 7 is then released and falls against the carbon surface 10, while the I carbon surface 11 rests against the check 6. The check 5 is now folded down upon the check 7 and the book is ready for the process of manifolding the memorandum made on the check 5, the impression made by the pencil on this check causing the deposit of carbon on the checks 6 and 7. When the memo- IOO randum of the sale has been made, the check 6 is separated from its stub and from the checks 5 and 7. The check 5 may be given to the purchaser, the check 6 sent to the cashier, and the check 7 given to the bundle-clerk, each of these being a check upon the others. By the use of partially-transparent paper it will be found that the copy on check 7 may be read through the body of the check, being more readily deciphered than when read backward.
The carbon herein described is intended to act on two of the checks at the same impression. Hence it is immaterial whether two sheets of carbon be used, placed back to back,
or if a single sheet having carbon applied to both sides be used. The stub is intended to provide a portion for securing the sheets, and it is notnecessary that the stub extend laterally from the central check. It may occupy any relation with said check whereby the object of securing the check is accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A salescheck' book comprising a series of leaves each having a central portion furnished with a securing-stub, and end portions foldable on the central portion, with a duplex carbon adapted to be interposed between two of said portions.
2. A sales-check book comprising a series of leaves, or slips, each having a central check furnished with a securing-stub, and end checks foldable on the central check.
8. A sales-check book comprising a series of slips, or leaves, each having a central check furnished with a securing stub, and end 1 checks foldable on the central check, in com- EDWARD S. LOWE.
W'itnesses:
