UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PERRY A. MCCASKEY, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE MCOASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
MANIFOLDING-PAD HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1907.
Original application filed December 31, 1906, Serial No. 350.273. Divided and this application filed May 27. 1907. Serial No. 375,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY A. MCGASKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding-Pad Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to holders for pads or books of bill slips of the character that are used for making duplicate billsby the carbon or similar process, and the invention relates also to holders for carbon sheets to be used with the bill slips, the'carbon holder being adapted to be held in proper position by means of the pad and the pad holder, the invention having reference particularly to pad holders having covers for the pads and carbon sheet, this invention having been illustrated inan application for Letters Patent filed Dec.
31, 1906, Serial No. 350,273, and divided therefrom.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder or case for bill pads which may be manufactured at relatively small cost and adapted to hold various styles of duplicating slips, a further object being to provide a durable and economical bill pad holder, the cover of which may be used in some cases as a stop card when the original bill slip form has carbon on its back, and which holder may be adapted for use when a separate carbon sheet is required for duplicating.
The invention consists in a pad holder comprising certain novel features of construction, and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and referred to in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the improved pad holder and a pad and carbon sheet holder arranged therein; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the pad holder with the cover thereof in open position;
Fig. 3, a longitudinal central sectional view of the cover of the pad holder; Fig. 4, a fragmentary longitudinal central sectional view of the pad holder and cover; Fig. 5, a longitudinal central sectional view of the pad holder; and, Fig. 6, a perspective view of a carbon sheet holder and a flexible sheet mounted thereon to be placed under the bill slips for making duplicate copies of bills.
Similar reference characters throughout the several figuresof the drawings designate corresponding elements or features of construction.
Thebill slips above referred to are designed to be manufactured as cheaply as possible to be used by merchantseither in places of business or in the hands of solicitors elsewhere as occasion may require, and
after the slips of a pad have been used a new pad is to be inserted into a holder.
In some pads the backs of the original slips are provided with carbon or transferring substance, while in other pads a separate carbon sheet is employed, and in the improved pad holder either style of pad may be used as may also pads which may be bound in various ways. a The improved pad holder is designed to be constructed of aluminium or other suitable metal and may be variously ornamented or finished to suit the fancy, and it comprises a rectangular back plate a having an upturned head piece b which is turned over and forms a lip c that extends opposite to the back plate, the latter having an upturned flange d at one side thereof, and a bill pad 6 may be placed on the back plate a with its bound end under the lip c and one side thereof against the flange b, the pad having a back board e to extend under two lips f and f that are formed on the end of the plate a opposite to the head piece I), the lips being at opposite corners of the plate and extending towards the head piece b above but near the back plate a. Between the two lips an upturned foot piece 9 is formed on the end of the back plate a and at the top thereof has a turned over portion 9 that receives a hinge pin h to form hinging members.
The holder has a cover 1' which is approximately of the size and shape of the back plate a and at two corners thereof has turned over hinging members 7' and j which embrace the hinge pin h, thereby connecting the cover to the foot piece g. The cover has a lip is turned over at the end thereof between the hinging members j and j, and the cover has also a turned over lip Z on the opposite end thereof, so that a memorandum card or sheet 0 may be held on the under side of the cover by means of the lips 70 and l.
A stiff sheet holder m of rectangular form is provided which in its narrower dimension is equal to the narrower dimension of the back plate a, and its longer di mension is somewhat less than the longer dimension of the back plate a, and a flexible sheet n is attached at one of the longer edges thereof to one of the longer edges of the holder m, the sheet n usually having carbon thereon to be used for duplicating processes, but will be devoid of carbon when carbon is supplied to backs of bill slips, so that when necessary the sheet n may be used as a stop card to prevent transferring onto sheets beneath, or when the cover 2' may be used conveniently with some styles of: bill slips the holder m and sheet a may be dispensed with.
In practical use the pad is to be placed in the holder as shown in Fig. 1 with the holder m under the back board 6 of the pad, and the pad being secured in the holder by means of the lips c and f and f will secure the holder m in the desired position and the sheet 71 will be drawn over the top of the pad, and then the covert will swing over the top of the sheet 11,. When it is desired to make entries on the bill slips the operations will be performed in the usual way, using such of the devices herein-described as may be suitable.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A pad holder comprising a back plate provided at an end thereof with two lips extending from the end over portions of the plate, an upturned foot-piece between the lips, and a cover hinged to the foot-piece.
2. A pad holder comprising a back plate having a plurality of turned-up portions at one end thereof, two of the portions being turned over and forming lips extending over portions of the plate, and another portion extending higher than the 'lips and turned over and forming a hinging member, and a cover hinged to the hinging member.
3. A duplicating pad holder comprising a back plate having on one end thereof an integral foot-piece and also two integral turned-over portions forming lips at the ends of the foot-piece, a cover hinged to the top of the foot-piece, 'a head-piece on the opposite end of the back plate, and a lip on the head-piece.
4. A duplicating pad holder comprising a back plate having on one end thereof an integral foot-piece and also a turned-over portion forming an integral lip, a cover hinged to the top of the foot-piece, a head-piece on the opposite end of the back plate, and a flange on a side edge of the back plate.
7 5. The combination of a pad holder comprising a back plate with lips on opposite ends thereof and a flange on one side thereof, a pad under one of the lips andhaving a back board extending under the other one of the lips, a transfer-sheet holder comprising a plate held adjacent to the back board, and a transfer sheet attached to the transfer-sheet holder to extend over the top of the pad against the flange.
6. In a pad holder, the combination with a back-plate having an upturned foot-piece, of a cover hinged to the foot-piece and having a turned-over portion on the hinged part thereof forming a lip exitendingpartially over the cover towards the free end thereof, and a lip on the free end of the cover, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses, on the 21st day of May, 1907.
PERRY A. MCCASKEY.
