LESTER A. "WERNER-Y, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO UNDERWOOD TYPE- WRITER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N.
Y., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LESTER A. WnRNERY,a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn borough, in the county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sets of Manifolding-Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to manifolding, particularly where one of the worksheets is to be used as a statement or periodical bill, and another is to be used as a ledger sheet or leaf, or where for any other purpose superposed work-sheets are to be typewritten in a predetermined relation.
It has been the practice to keep the statement and ledger leaf together during the month or other period which is to be covered by the statement; and each time that a fresh item is to be inserted in the statement, to place the ledger leaf first in the typewriting machine and locate it accurately by means of perforations in the sides of the sheet which are impaled upon registering or collating pins upon the typewriting machine then the v carbon sheet is placed upon the ledger sheet, and finally the statement sheet, (also. perforated), is likewise impaled upon the reg1sthe position of the statement tering pins;
being chosen, so
sheet upon the ledger leaf that the next line of writing upon the ledger leaf may fold just last line typed thereon.
This necessitates the printing of many indicating lines and numbers upon the workor all of the sheets of excess width, particularly the statebelow the ments, which'it is desirable to make narrow,
but which it is foundnecessary to make as wide as the ledger leaves, in order to accommodate the side perforations. When the sheets are removed from the typewriting machine, their relative location is lost, so that time is consumed in repositioning them in the machine for the typing of the next item, at a later date. If it should be attempted to use clips to aid in keeping the statement sheet and ledger leaf together while out of, use, it would be found inconvenient, because'of the clips, to re-insert the ledger leaf in the loose-leaf ledger back, and to bind the leaf in place; moreover the clips would not pass readily through the rolls of the typewriting machine, rendering the Specification of Letters Patent.

sheets liable to injury and relative displacement. Thenecessity of equipping the typewriting machine with impaling pins for registering the sheets is a further expense and ob ection. Moreover, in many instances, where a customer has been accustomed to using unperforated work-sheets according to old methods, he usually has a large stock of such sheets, and it is found difficult to arrange for a re-stocking with perforated sheets, and hence diflicult to induce him to adopt typewriting methods for bookkeeping purposes. In addition, it is found in practice diflicult or impossible to manufacture the sheets with the perforations made therein with sufficient accuracy.
The principal objects of my invention are to avoid the labor of collating the sheets in.
the typewriting machine, and the expense and waste of punching the sheets for collating purposes and of the machine equipping with collating pins, and to avoid the necessity of using extra wide statement sheets,
leaf having a statement attached to the face thereofaccording to my invention, said statement being attached to the bottom portion of the ledger leaf, the upper portion whereof has been filledwith lines of items duplicated from a previously written statement.
Fig. 4; is a sectional view to show the relation of the statement, ledger leaf and interposed carbon; the heading of the statement being folded under, and the carbon lying against the face of the ledger leaf throughout.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the parts in the relation seen at Fig. 3; the lower portion of the statement being also folded up under the body of the same,
"with other leaves in the for convenience in binding the leaf in the up to disclose the gum upon a portion of the under face thereof. 7
In carrying out my invention, I employ a ledger leaf or sheet 10 of usual form, but preferably omitting the side margin perforations, as well as the usual lines and numbers as sociated with said perforations; said sheet having the usual means 10Kfor b inding purposes. The invoice or statement sheet 11 may be much narrower than the ledger sheet, which is anadvantage, because it may be so narrow as not to receive thereon the typed amount of the old balance, which typewritten upon the ledger sheet; and it may also be so narrow as not to receive the number folio and other data which are not necessary or not desired upon a statement or invoice. Moreover the reduction in width decreases the cost.
Upon the statement I place preferablynat each side a projecting tongue 12, which has upon its under face a gum or adhesive material 13, so that the tongues may be moistened and gummed directly upon the faceof the ledger leaf, as shown, thereby securing the statement sheet thereto, so that their relation is fixed for all typewriting purposes, F
regardless of the length periods during which the sheets are kept attached together, and regardless of the number of items placed upon the statement, or the number of times that the attached sheets are insertedin the typewriting machine. Moreover, the attached sheets pass readily between the rolls of" the typewriting machine. V r 7 Where the statement or invoice has a heading 14, the tongues may be placed at the sides of the sheet just below the heading, and the sheet may be folded to bring the heading beneath the body of the sheet outof the way, Figs. 1, 3, 4, 5. The statement sheet may have vertical rulings, dividing it into columns to match columns upon the ledger of the period or leaf. The carbon sheet 15 may be inserted with its face next to the ledger leaf, and underlying all the typewriting field upon the statement sheet. The carbon may be removed after each entry is made upon the statement. In this manner, the statement and ledger sheets may be kept together and inserted into the typewriting machine and removed as many times as without the necessity of every time, thus effecting Moreover, the ledger leaf s m n new be ead ly in erted and b n ledg r,
.ef the peri d fo may be required, re-collating' them a saving of time.
After the termina ion to the face of the ledger leaf, the corner of the tongue being turned therefrom by a line is usually 7 7 point down the with its attached which the statement is written, orafter the statement is full, it may be detached by separating it from its tongues, which may remain attached to the face of the-ledger sheet, as at 12 Where they are so small as to be inconspicuous and unobjectionable.
For convenience in detaching the invoice or 7 statement, the tongues may be separated of perforations 16, .or other weakened line. Some of the columns on the ledger leaf are typed with items that do not appear upon the statement; and it will be understood that some of the typeimpressions may fall upon these tongues without objection, since they may remain permanently gummed to the ledger leaf.
During the next month or otherperiod, it 7 may be necessary to begina fresh statement for the same customer, at a point just below the entries 17 .already -made upon the ledger leaf, and
ment to be attached to the ledger leaf at any page, and hence any desired collation or registration of the two sheets may be secured. In case, of the second or third statement for the same page of the ledger, it should be found that the statement should project at its bottom beyond the lo-wer'edgeof the ledger sheet, or beyond its lower margin line, the statement may be folded up at the bottom, as at 18, igs. 3 and 5; the carbon 15,always remaining under the folded parts of the statement.
It will be perceived that the ledger leaf with the statement attached thereto may be inserted in the typewriting machine and ac curately positioned with reference to the printing line, by the use of a registering table, illustrated in the McGormack Patent.
No. 829,989,, and that then the manipulation of the platen may proceed in the usual manner, so that the two sheets may be positioned even more accurately in the machine than has heretofore been the case Where perforations and impaling pins hat e been resorted to, and without the trouble, expense and delay arising from the use of perforations.
The tongues may be integral with the outer sheets, as at 12 Fig. 2, beingv formed by trimming away side portions of the sheet, the under sides of these tongues being gummed; or other integral tongues may be formed within the scope of the invention. In other views, the tongues are shown as being formed separately .and attached to the Other forms of this may be done with fa- 'cility, because the tongues permit the stateduring the writing v used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with a main sheet having a form printed thereon, of an auxiliary sheet having a corresponding form printed thereon and provided with projecting tongues, whereby it is secured upon the face of the main sheet with the forms registering, said projecting tongues being gummed upon their under surfaces for attachment to the main sheet.
2. The combination with a main sheet having a form printed thereon, of an auxiliary sheet having a corresponding form printed thereon and provided with projecting tongues, whereby it is secured upon the face of the main sheet with the forms registering, said projecting tongues having weakened lines at their junctions with the auxiliary sheet, to permit the auxiliary sheet to be removed while the tongues remain permanently upon the main sheet.
3. The combination with a ledger leaf Copies .of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the provided with binding means, of a statement or invoice sheet of substantially less width than the ledger leaf, said statement provided with laterally projecting tongues whereby it is gummed upon the face of the ledger leaf, and said tongues being separated by' weakened lines from the statement sheet.
4:. The combination with a ledger leaf provided with binding means and having a form printed thereon, of a statement or invoice sheet of substantially less width than the ledger leaf and having a corresponding form printed thereon, said statement having a heading which is folded under, and also having laterally projecting tongues below said heading, whereby it is gummed upon the face of the ledger leaf.
