full, clear, and 'eXact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference Y marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved multiform billing sheet and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.V
YThe object of the invention is to produce amultiform .billing sheet which is so constructed and arranged that' a number of copies may be made at the one writing, and if desired, a copy produced on a record sheet separate from the multiform bill sheet, and which may be so folded that but one folded edge is presented to the platen when Athe bill is inserted in atypewriter.
The improved bill is provided on certain sections with transfer` material so that the use of interposed carbon sheets is dispensed with. Y
The improved bill is of particular 'advan-l tage for use in connection with the'business of public utilities or public service corporations where there are required for eX- ample, in addition-to the original bill, collection sheets, cashiers copies, ledger sheets, meter readers copies, and the like. The bill is so printed'that the particular forms required for the different purposes appear on the several sections of the bill sheet and the sections provided :with the carbon transfer material may be so blocked out that when f desired all or only parts of the matter written on the original bill may be made to appear on either or any of the several copies.
The various advantages of my invention will appear as I proceed with my specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective viewofa multiform billing sheet made in accordance with my' invention, as it appears wheny folded and readyto be written upon.r Fig. 2 is a transverse section onan enlarged scale through my improved bill form when folded, the plane of the ksection being indicated on lines 2*-2 of Fig. 1. Fig: 3 1s a front faceview of my improved billing sheet prior to the folding thereof. Fig. 4 is a face View of thereverse side of the sheet.` Figs. 5,6, 7, 8 and 9 respectively are diagrammatic views illustrating the manner in which the sheet is folded'upon itself.
Referring now to that embodiment of mv invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the multiform bill# ing sheet as a whole. (See Fig. 3.) Said sheet is divided into a plurality of substani tially equal sections by transverse lines 11 of perforation, scoring or other weakening `means.` As shown there'are eight of saidV sections, indicated bythe numerals 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 respectively. Several of said sections, viz: the sections 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18 are' printed upon one side or the other with the desired ruled forms, 13a, 14a, 16a, 17a and 18a respectively and may have also printed thereon any such matter as may be required in the particular use to which the bill form as a whole is to be put.
"The forms 13?* and 17a on the sections 13 and 17 respectively are printed on the front or obverse face ofthe sheet and are arranged Vwith their heads toward the top of the sheet so as to be read from the top to the bottom of the sheet. The forms 14a, 16zt andf18a on the sections 14, 16 and 18 respectively are printed on the reverse side or back of the sheetV and are 'arranged with their kheads towardthe bottom of the sheet.
The sections 12 and 16 of the sheet 1() are provided on their'front faces with a coating of carbon or like'transfer material 12x and 16X respectively. lThe Vreverse sides of the sections 13, 15 andV 19 are likewise provided with carbon'coatings 13", 15X and 19x'respectively. i The front faces of the sections 14,' 15, 18 and 19 respectively are blank and the reverse sides of the sections 10 and 17 are likewise left blank.
. The sheet is folded in the following manfourth sections 14 and 15 respectively, so as to overlap the sections 17, 16 and 15 respectively. frseerig 63).' Wah the sections in Vof the section 16.
this position the carbon coating 13X "on the section 13, engages the printed bill form 16a That part ofthe sheet comprising the seventh and eighthV sections 19 and 18 respectively is then folded back,
about that line ofperforations lldividing Ythe sixthV and seventh sections, 18 and 17 respectively, so asV to overlap the first and second' sections12 andf13 respectively, with the-carbon coating 19 engaging against the printed bill form 13?* on the section 13.v (See Fig. 7.) Y NeXt in order'or the third' fold, that part of the sheet comprising the third i and fourth ,sections 14 .and 15l respectively isfoldedback upon the already folded sections of the sheet so as to overlie the sections 19, 13vand 16 respectivelywith the carbon coating 15X in engagement with the bill form'14a ofthe Section 14. This fold brings of the eighthsection 19.
thethirdsection 14 against the reverse side (See Fig. 8.) The two parts thus left are folded along the line 11V dividingy the fifth and sixth sections so that, that part of the sheet comprising thek the original Vinscription or Writing. TheV `original inscription or Writing upon the printed form 17 will be reproduced through the I carbon coatings before mentioned upon the various tions.k v
It is'apparent thatvvhen the .sheetis foldprinted forms of the lother sec-V lediin the manner described Vthere Will be butua single `'edge at the top of vthe folded sections which edgegwill permit of a ready and easyintroduction of the folded sections to the platen ofa typewriting machine.
The multiform billing sheet as illustrated and described is adapted for use in connec# t tion with the accounting system of al public Y. en
service corporation, producing and selling anelectric current forvarlous vpurposes to factories, stores, homes,V etc., located in the surrounding territory.Y The amount of current usedbyeachisjrecorded by meter and `abill statementk for the amount of electricity used is sent each `individual consumer each month.-
Each meteris numbered anda record of the location and number of each meter is Y kept on file. A.Meter readers or inspectors are employed to read the meters and such readings V`are. turned into the accounting depart- .mentof the corporation." Addressing machines are used for addressing the folded bill form to the various consumers and at the sameutii'ne print Yupon said form the con sumers reco-rd or serial number as Well vas the number of the consumers meten After the foldedbill form has been so addressed ais at 20 in Fig. 1, a typist inserts said folded billv along With a so-called control s heed7 or general sales sheet into a typewriter vWith a carboncoating 16x on the section 16 in contact with the said control sheet."7
Upon the ruled form'17at ofthe bill form is typevvritten .the account number inits proper` column along` With. the last meter reading, and the present meter. reading, the difference between said meter readings determining the amount of current used. lPhe rate ory cost of theainount of current used is also typewritten upon thel folded billv form as is any' other item as the occasiondemands.` The originalfivriting uponthe section 17 1s reproduced upon various other sections Vprof vided Withvthe ruled yforms and also upon the control or general sales sheetfby means of the rseveral carbon coatings before referred` to, the carbon coating 16X inthis in,- stance leaving a carbon impression ofthe Writing or inscription upon the said sales sheet.` The folded bill form is then Withdrawn from the typewriting. machine and the several sections are torn apart along thev lines of perforations 11 beforereferredi to.
The sections upon which are printedA the several ruled forms are then sent, one, viz:
the section 17 to the consumer andthe restV to the various clerks and book keepers for matter of record. The sectionsupon which no ruled formsV4 are printed, vizzathe sec- f tions 10,15 and-19 may then be destroyed.
In. describingV myk invention Iv have. referred to the specific arrangement for .one particular purpose but itislapparent that 'said arrangementmayv be modiiedto meet the requirements oflthe'use demandediwithout departing froml the real spirit offthe invention.
What I claim is:
