B. 1). MIDDLEKAUPP & A. N. A'ITKEN.
' CHECK BOOK.
No. 526,787. Patented 0613. 2, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLSWORTH D. MIDDLEKAUFF AND ANDREW N. AITKEN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 526,787, dated October 2, 1894.
Application filed May 1, 1894:. Serial No. 509,711. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ELLSWORTH D. MID- DLEKAUFF and ANDREW N. AITKEN, citizens of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check- Books; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in check books and it consists in a series of leaves detachably attached in the front of such book, a blotter rigidly attached near the center, check blanks detachably attached in the back of such book and such other devices and combination of devices as will be fully explained in the specification and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of our checkbook opened at the check blank and the blotter. Fig. 2 is a View of the same open at the blotter and record leaves, the blotter having the corner turned back. Fig. 3 is a View of the same opened at the front cover, and having the record leaves and blotter turned back, and Fig. 4c is an end view of the book showing the arrangement of the-entire series of leaves, &c.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the entire views.
A represents the covers of our improved check book and B represents check blanks which are detachably attached to stubs O which are rigidly attached to the book. Such check blanks are adapted to be filled out, in proper form, and detached from the stubs O.
D represents a blotter sheet which is rigidly attached to the book, and adapted to engage the face of the check blanks.
E represents sheets suitably ruled for the purpose of keeping a record of money depos-l ited in the bank and also arecord of the checks delivered. Such sheets E are detachably attached to stubs E which are rigidly attached to the book.
Gr represents stubs which are rigidly attached to the book next the front cover of the same, such stubs having one side gummed for the purpose of attaching the record sheets, after the same have been filled and detached, The mode of using our improved check book is as follows:The check being filled out in proper form, the blotter sheet is pressed against the face of the check, thus absorbing any surplus ink. Then a suitable record is entered on the sheet E and the reverse side of the blotter sheet is pressed against the face of the sheet E, thus absorbing the surplus ink. When the record sheet E is filled, the same is detached from the stub F and attached to one of the stubs G. As will be plainly seen, the blotter sheet D is always next the record sheets, and the check blanks throughout the entire use of the book.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a check book, the combination with its covers and check blanks detachably connected to stubs, which are rigidlyattached to the back of the book, of a blotter sheet rigidly attahed to the back of such book, and adapted to engage the faces of the check blanks and record sheets, the record sheets detachably connected to stubs, which are rigidly attached to the back of the book, and stubs provided with gumined faces, such stubs being rigidly attached to the back of the book near the front cover of the same and adapted to receive the filled record sheets, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ELLSWORTH D. MIDDLEKAUFF. ANDREW N. AITKEN. Witnesses:
MARK LANE, MOLBRY HAYNES.
