CASE FOR COPY-BOOKS AND COPIES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,444, dated June 16, 1885.

` To all whom fit may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL ALIsoN RAD- LEY, of Lawrenceburg, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Case for Copy-Books and Copies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v

` The object of my invention is to provide a simple copy book or case to assist the pupil in acquiring a practical knowledge ot' pen and pencil writing.

This invention, which is an improvement on the copy-book and case for which Letters Patent No. 295,941 were granted to me on the lst day of April, 1884, consists in special constructions and combinations of parts of the copy book or case, whereby it forms a receptacle for the writing materials and copy-slips, and for the book of instructions for the pupil, and hereby the Written book or copy may conveniently be passed beneath the copy-slip, which is held by clamps over a hinged plate or tablet which is slated on the outer face, so that the writing may be done by pen or pencil, as desired, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved copy book or case, shown closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the open book or case; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation on the line a: m, Fig. 2.

The letters A B indicate, respectively, the two parts or sides of the copy book or case, which are connected by any suitable hinge at a/ at the inside and by a flexible back, C, at the outside, adapting the partsA B to be folded dat or closed on each other, as in Fig. l, or to be opened to lie at in position for use, asin Figs. 2 and 3. The part A has a recess, D, in its inside face, in which to place the book E of instructions in the art of penmanship, which goes with the copy-book, and one or more sheets, F, of blotting paper.

Above the recess D, in a broader recess, G, I arrange a board or plate, H, made of paper, wood, or other suitable material, and I hinge this plate H to one edge-preferably the upper edgc-of the part A by hinges h of any approved kind, so that the plate H forms a cover tothe recess D, and also a bed or tablet on which to place the copybook or paper I to be written upon by the pupil; and I propose to cover the outer face of the plate H with a slating 7 composition, as shown by the darkly-shaded lines in Fig. `2, so that exercises in pencil-writin g may be given the pupil preparatory to the pen-and-ink practice. The outer or upper face ofthe closed plate H lies below the face a of the part A of the copy-book, or of ribs or guide strips J J, liXe-d thereto, to at'n ford free movement of the copy-book or paper I below the copy-slip K, which is placed across the plate H, and is held at opposite lends by the clamp plates or strips L, which, as shown, consist of pieces of spring-metal hinged to suitable eyes, Z, held to the part A, so that said clampplates L may be swung back on their hinges to place the copy-slip in proper position, and then be swung over to lock by their bent shoulders at Z' against the end shoulders, Z3, of recesses Z2, which latter allow the free ends Z'il of the clamp-plates to pass below the face a of the part A, and afford room for the finger or thumb to enter beneath the ends ZJl to swing the clamp-plates back on their hinges when a new copy-slip is to be inserted.

It will be seen that the plate H extends the whole length of the copy-book or case, which allows thecopy book I, or paper to be written upon, to be slid freely up or down, to and past either the upper or lower edges of the part A, so that the book or paper I may conveniently be slid beneath the copy-slip K, or be shifted on the plate II below the slip for successive lines of copy, for keeping the eopyslip close to the eye of the pupil while writing.

The part B of the-copy book or case is recessed below its face b, to form a number of pockets, M, in which to place the numbered and graded copy-slips K, which I hold in the ICO ets O in which are fastened elastic loops, or eyes 0 0, or other suitable catches, to hold the pencil P and pen Q, which come below the surface b of the part B, to allow the parts A B to shut close together, for which latter purpose, also, the recesses b b in the part B allow entrance of the copy-slip clamp-plates L L, and the guideribs J J enter the pockets O O, as will readily be understood.

The paper copy-slips K are much lighterand more convenient to use than metallic or other plates having paper copy-slips pasted or otherwise secured to them, as shown in the aforesaid patent granted to me; and I make special mention of the desirable features of construction embodied inthe part A of the copy book or case for holding the book of instructions and blotters, for allowing pencil practice, and for permitting free movement of the book or paper I past the opposite edges of the part A and beneath the copy-slip.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A copy book or case made in two parts, A B, connected at C, to open and close, as speciiied, and said part A havin g the recesses D G, the hinged plate H, slated on the outer face, and the hinged copy-slip clamps L L, and said part B vhaving a series of recesses or pockets, M, for the copy-slips K, a cap, N, spanning the pockets and leaving them open at both ends, and pen and pencil recesses O O, substantially as shown and described.

2. The part A of the copy-case made with the recess D, the recess G, a hinged plate, H, lying in the recess G and forming the cover to the recess D, and forming, also, the writin gtablet, and the clamp-plates L L, for holding the copy K over the tablet, substantially as shown and described. 1

3. The part A of the copycase made with the recess D, the recess G, a hinged plate, H, lying in the recess G and forming the cover to the recess D, and forming, also, the writin gtablet, and the clamp-plates L L, for holding the copy-slips K over the tablet, and the outer face of the plate H being slated for pencilwriting,'substantially as shown and described.

4. The partA ofthe copycase made with a hinged writing-tablet, H, and copy-slip clamps at each side of the tablet, and said tablet extending from and between opposite edges of the case to aiord free passage of the copybook or paper I under the copy-slip, substantially as shown and described.
