RICHARD R. VERNON, OF \VOODBRIDGE, NE\V JERSEY.
COMBINED BOOK AND INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,259, dated July 29, 1890.
Application filed March 17,1890- Serial No. 344,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD R. VERNON, of Voodbridge, in the county of Middlescx and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Book and Index, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved combined book and index, which is simple and durable in construction, allows of folding the index into the book, and permits of using the book or index each independently of and without disturbing the other, and enables the user to bring the index, into a convenient position for inspection or for writing in the names, titlesand page-numbers of letters, accounts, or other entries desired to be made.
The invention consists of a combined book and index, the back ofthe' index being adapted to and formed 011 the upper edge of a leaf secured to one of the covers of the book and adapted to fold into the same.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the improvement as used. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same as opened ready for use, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation Of the same.
The book A is provided with the usual covers B and O, secured on the back D, and bet ween which are held the leaves E. On one of the covers 13 or O, preferably the righthand cover O, is attached a leaf F, having an extended part F passed onto the inside of the cover C- and secured to the same, preferably, abouthalf-way, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A crease F is formed on the leaf F at the outer edge of the cover 0, so that the said leaf can be folded into the book A between the cover C and the leaves E.
On the upper edge G of the leaf F is socured or formed the back of the index H, of usual construction, comprising a suitable number of leaves fastened on the back H,
secured, as above mentioned, to the upper edge of the leaf F. The index H is preferably provided along its inner edges with the letter-tabs I, having their edges notched or partly cut away and lettered, as is usual in indexes for letter-copying and account books. Similar letter-tabs J are formed along the lower edge of the index, the letters of the tabs corresponding with the letters on the tabs I, so that the index can be opened at the correct place from either the inner edge or the botto m, as desired. The book A can be adapted for copying accounts, memoranda, or the like, or for letter-press copying and for manifold writing.
When the book is closed, the index H rests between the leaf F and theinside of the cover 0, the top of the index being the leaf F, on which rest the leaves E of the book A.
When the operator desires to use the book and index, he first opens the book A, then places the leaves E onto the cover B, and then swings the index II, with the leaf F, to the right, into the position shown in Fig. 2. The book and index are then opened and are ready for use. \Vhen the operator now desires to write the name, title, or page of a letter, memoranda, or other account in the leaves E of the book A into the index H, he opens the latter at the proper place (indicated by the letter-tabs I and J) by swinging the respective leaves of the index l-I upward and outward to the position shown in Fig. 1, so that the proper page of the index II is in front of the writer at the right-hand side of the book A.
It will be seen that the operator is enabled to conveniently turn the leaves of the book A without interfering in the least with the leaves of the index II, and the latter can be examined and opened in a like manner without interfering with the leaves of the book A.
hen the index is folded into the book, as previously described, the said book can be used for writing and copying in the usual manner. It will be seen that by this arrangement the operator can conveniently use the indexes or books each independent of the other, and that he also has the index right in front of him whenever he desires to use the same.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' dependent leaf secured to one of the covers I claim as new and desire to secure by Letand adapted to be opened outward in line ters Patent- 1. The combination, with abook, of an independent leaf secured to one of the covers and adapted to be opened outward in line with the leaves of the book and also to fold between the said cover and leaves, and an index secured by its back to the upper edge of the said independent leaf, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a book, of an inwith the leaves of the book and also to fold between the said cover and leaves, an index secured by its back to the upper edge ofthe said independent leaf, and letter-tabs formed on two adjoining edges of the said index, substantially as shown and described.
, RIOHARD R. VERNON.
