Description

D. A. DAVIS. REFERENCE INDEXES.
Nn.1821,564. Patented Sept. 26, 1876.
N. PETERS. PHOTO'LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTONy D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE ADWIGHT A. DAVIS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFERENCE-INDEXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 182,564, dated September 26, 1876; application filed May 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT A. DAvIs, of the city and county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reference- Indexes; and I hereby declare that the following is a description of my said invention sufciently full, clear, and exact to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 represents a view of my improved reference-index opened. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same closed; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 show sectional views of the leaves illustrating different modes of construction.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and serviceable means for the temporary tiling of letters, bills, notes, and similar papers, in such manner .that any of the said papers can readily be referred to by index when required.
My invention consists in a reference-index book, made substantially as hereinafter described; also, in a reference-pocket attachment for books, as hereinafter set forth.
My improved reference-index consists of a series of sheets or leaves, A, bound as a book at one side to the covers B, with suitable stubleaves (l inserted to give proper thickness at the binding D, as shown. The leaves A are severally indexed at their margin E alphabetically, by date or otherwise, as required, and each leaf is provided With a pocket or receptacle, F, at its lower half, into which letters, bills, or other papers are placed, with their upper ends extending above the top of the pocket sufficiently to show their heading or indorsement, as illustrated at G, Fig. l.
The various papers are arranged in their proper order throughout the book, so as to alphabetically correspond with the index. By
this method any particular paper may be readily and quickly referred to when required, since it is only `necessary to open the book at the letter or index mark-corresponding to the heading or name on the paper required. y
The pocket-pieces F are secured to the leaves A of the book by folding under their edges and pasting or gluing the fold to the paper or material of the leaf A. This may be done With a single fold, as shown in Fig. 8, a double fold, asin Fig. 4, or with a bellows fold, as in Fig. 5, according to the space required in the pockets.
If desired, more than a single pocket may be arranged on a page or leaf', so that the several classes of documents, as letters, notes, bills, &c., can each have aseparate pocket under a single index.
The reference-pockets, folded as described, may be attached to the leaves or cover of any ordinary book for the reception of such memoranda or notes as it is desirable or convenient to keep in or with the book.
The pockets may be attached to the leaves during the manufacture of the book, or be separately prepared and attached by and at the convenience of the person using them.
What I claim as new andA of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture, is-
1. The reference index book herein described, consisting of indexed leaves A, provided With pockets or receptacles F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A pocket attachment for books, consisting of a sheet of fabric bordered with three pasted folds, lsubstantially as and for the purpose set forth.
