To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK N. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to files and more especially to exhibit files for holding manuscripts, letters, and printed matter of any kind.

The invention comprises the production of means for forming a book having a plurality of pockets positioned therein.

It also comprises the production of leaves formed with folded edges secured in such manner as to form a book having a pocket structure formed on each leaf.

The object in view is the production of a memoranda book securely bound in the usual manner and having a memoranda sheet and means for holding loose letters or leaves in the book.

Another object in view is the production of a memoranda book having a plurality of pockets formed therein for forming an exhibit file, the pockets being so arranged as to permit of the exhibit of the contents of the letters filed therein.

A still further object is the production of a book, each or support for manuscripts, papers and the like.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed:

In the accompanying drawingz-Figure 1 is a plan View of my invention showing the book in an open position. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 online 2 2. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the leaves of the book removed. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a slightly modified form of memoranda forming part of my invention. Fig. 5 is a section taken through 5-5 of Fig. 1.

In the preferred form of my invention, I provide a suitable back or covering l, which is adapted to accommodate any suitable number of leaves 2 which are secured to the back or covering 1 in any convenient Way. The leaf 2 is made from any desirable material such as cardboard covered with gauze, or of some strong flexible paper. The leaves 2 are formed with folds on three sides thereof which are adapted to be folded and secured together to form a pocket or receptacle for letters, manuscripts, and the like. The leaf 2 is folded on its lower edge on the line 3, and on its sides on lines 4 and 5. The folding of the lower edge on the line 3 forms a flap which is divided into two distinct parts, as 6 and 7. The part 7 is provided on one side thereof with any desirable adhesive matter or gum, and may be provided on the opposite side with a reinforcing strip of cloth or leather for giving strength to that part of the leaf. The flap 6 is provided on the end opposite to the portion 7 with adhesive matter 9, which adapts it to be secured when folded to fiap 10, formed by folding the leaf at 5.

In forming the leaf 2 in its proper shape the fold on iiap 10 is bent toward the center of the leaf, then the flap 6 is folded on line 3 and the portion 9 is secured to the end of flap 10, thus forming one side of the pocket. The other side of the pocket is formed by turning the Hap 11 on the line 4 and then securing the end 7 to the same through the use of the adhesive matter secured thereon. In forming this leaf, I preferably rule the same, as 12, for accommodating any matter that may be placed thereon in the way of a memoranda. In making the folds 6, 10 and 11 they are preferably made comparatively narrow so as to permit any matter to be seen that is placed within the pocket-like formation of the leaf 2.

I have described my invention as being made from one integral piece of material and the iiaps may be formed therefrom, but, I desire to have it understood that it is within the scope of this inveniton to have the flaps made from separate material of any convenient or desirable material and secured to the leaf 2 by gluing or otherwise securing the same in place.

When the leaf 2 has all of its flaps folded inward toward the center it will form a pocket-like structure as will be clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In the preferred construction of my invention, I have provided a space ruled with convenient lines, as 12, for any memoranda that may be desired to be placed thereon, but if preferable I may, in place of the memoranda 12, place an additional sheet of paper, as 13, within the pocket formed by the folding of the fiaps of the leaf 2. When this is done the memoranda, as will be evident, may be removed and a new one placed therein when the same has been filled or mutilated in any way.

The leaves 2 are secured in the back or covering 1, in any convenient way so as to form a book with leaves as in the usual construction of books, but each leaf being formed in the particular way, above described, so as to provide a pocket or retaining means for letters, manuscripts, and the like on each leaf. An additional strip 14 is secured to the fold 11 of leaf 2, and is used as a spacing lug or portion. In the preferred form of my invention I have shown the iiap 11 running the entire length of the cover while the fiap 10 runs substantially one-half the distance of flap 11. I preferably form the flaps in this way so that when filing the bills, they may be easily removed from the case. The flaps 6 and 7 are made separate so that in opening the book the slot 15 will permit the bending of the cover without unduly straining the leaf 2, as would be thecase if the fiaps 6 and 7 were formed in one piece.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

1. In a le, the combination of a leaf, and a plurality of flaps extending along the edges of the leaf and turned inwardly to form a pocket, one of the aps being in sections to enable the leaf to be readily folded.

2. In a file, the combination of a leaf, a plurality of flaps extending inwardly from the edges of the leaf and forming a pocket, and means for connecting the meeting ends of the adjacent flaps, one of the said flaps being formed in sections'to permit of the ready folding of the leaf.

3. In a file, the combination' of a leaf, a pair of in- Wardly extending flaps secured to the longitudinal edges of the leaf, one of the said flaps extending approximately throughout one-half the length of the leaf, a bottom ap formed in section to enable the leaf t0 be readily folded,

and means for connecting the meeting ends of the naps at the corners of the leaf.

4. In a file holder, the combination of a plurality of leaves bound along one side thereof, aps turned inwardly from the sides of each of the leaves, and an end flap formed upon each of the leaves and coperatin'g with the side flaps to form a pocket, the said end flaps being formed in sections to enable the leaves to be readily folded 5. A file holder comprisingl a cover, and leaves mounted therein, formed with a plurality of folds adapted to produce a pocket thereon, one of said folds being slit at one end to form two parts thereof for permitting said leaf to bend as desired.
