UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. Sill-UV, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
BILL-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,667, dated June 23, 1896.
Application filed December 17,1894. Serial No. 532,07 (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, JAMES C. SHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bill-files for use by grocers and other small traders for filing duplicate purchase-slips; and its objects are, first, to provide for so bunching the sales-slips for each individual account that the account of any individual may be readily ascertained without the necessity of journal and ledger accounts, and, second, to provide a bill-file having a series of pockets, each overlapping the other, so constructed that each pocket may be made to receive several accounts without exceeding the capacity of the file, and I attain these objects by the construction shown in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front viewof my device. Fig. 2 is a top View, Fig. 3 is an edge View, and Fig. t is a back View, of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
In constructing my bill-file I take a series of sheets of paper or other suitable material and lap them one over the other, as indicated at A in Figs. 1 and 3, and secure them together by securing a strip, as a, to the back of the entire series, by which means the lower edge only of each sheet is secured to the strip, so that the strip acts not only as a support to hold the several sheets together, but the point of union between the two acts as the bottom of the pockets. I then told each end of the sheets back and secure them to a second and broader strip or back a", as shown at a in Figs. 2 and 3, which strip is, or may be, securely attached to the leaves G of the file. I reinforce the upper edges of the pockets by -or other suitable reinforcement along or through the top edges, as indicated at b and B" in Figs. 1 and 3.
B B B B are representations of several parcels of sales-slips stored in the several pockets, and B represents one parcel that is short and has slipped down entirely into the pocket, and is shown to illustrate the utility of the apertures 12 b, &c., in the tops of the several pockets.
The pockets may, if desired, be indexed and the accounts of individuals whose initial letter corresponds with any initial letter on a pocket inserted in such pocket; but as this means of designating the locality of an indi vidual account is old I of course do not claim it as a portion of my invention, but simply suggest it as a convenience in connection with my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bill-file, a series of oblong sheets lapped one upon the other, a strip secured to the backs thereof to form a support and bottoms for the pockets, and the edges of the sheets folded over and secured by an overlapping strip, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a bill-file, a series of overlapping sheets secured by a strip at the back, the ends of the sheets bent back and united by an overlapping strip, and a folding cover-to support the whole, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Signed at Grand Rapids, Michigamthis 12th day of December, 1894.
JAMES C. SHAIV.
