FOLDING BOOK-BACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 484,653, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLEN CLERK, acitizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Folding Book-Back, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding book-backs; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of this invention is to provide a folding book-back whereby a book may be folded or made flexible for convenience in carrying or conveying the same from one place to another within a small space and especially adapted for the use of canvassers.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved book back or cover in normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the back and remaining part of the book, shown folded. Fig. 3 is a transverse "ertical section of a portion of the book back or cover.

Similar numerals are used to indicate corresponding parts inthe several figures.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the book,havinga back orcover 2 of suitable stiff material, which is made in

sections

3, 4, and 5, the sections3 4being each connected to the other by a strip of textile fabric, as at 6, which is pasted or otherwise secured thereto and forms a hinge or joint for said parts. In like manner thestrips 4 and 5 are provided with a similar connection and the strip 5 is hinged or movable at its opposite edge, as in the ordinary form of book. The several strips or sections of the back or cover are connected in such manner by the strip 6 of textile fabric that they may be readily folded into compact form, as shown in Fig. 2, and adapt the same to be confined ina very small space.

As hereinbefore stated, the book as constructed in the foregoingdescrip ion is specially adapted for use of canvassers and may be conveniently carried form one place to another.

lhe advantages and utility of the device set forth will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and need not be further enlarged upon herein.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-

1. As an improved article of manufacture, a book having a back or cover having a stiff rounded supporting back portion and the front and back'leaf covers made in sections which are flexibly connected with each other and are adapted to be folded, substantially as described.

2. In a book, the combination of a back or cover having astiff rounded supporting back portion and the front and back leaf covers made in sections, and independent strips connecting said sections to hinge one to theother to adapt the same to be folded, substantially as described.
