UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
RICHARD WHEATLEY, J R, OF BIRMINGHAM, COUNTY OF IVARWVIOK, ENGLAND.
NEEDLE OR PIN CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,956, dated March 19, 1889.
Application filed September 24, 1888. Serial No. 286,266. (Nomodel-l Patented in England January 28, 1887, No. 1,360.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD WHEATLEY, Jr., a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Needle or Pin Cases, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 1,360, bearing date January 28,1887,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the improvement in needle and pin cases herein described, the object being to so arrange the pocket which contains the needles or pins that it will stand upright when the case is opened or upright on a fiat surface.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a general view of part of a needle-case open and provided with a pocket constructed according to my invention.- Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 shows the same form of pocket applied to a pin-case. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a modification of my invention in which gussets are employed at each end of the pocket to make it stand upright.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
Referring first more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A is the pocket proper, which is of ordinary form and open at the top a.
B B are the two pieces of. leather, paper, or similar material which are fixed at each side to the top or open edge a of the pocket A, and at the bottom are pulled out a short distance from the pocket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and turned up along each edge I) and glued or otherwise secured to the flat sides 0 O of the needle or pin case, thus maintaining the pocket in an upright position when the case is opened into a flat state. When the case is closed, the pocket A folds in between the sides O 0 as shown by Fig. 2. The outer inclosing-case consists of the flat sides C" 0 as before stated, and these are connected to each other by the flexible web 0 after the manner of a book-cover. The parts B B are secured along the edges of the flexible connection, which is of such width as will provide sufficient space between the sides 0 C when folded to contain the pocket with its needles and the supporting-pieces B B Needles or pins are held in the improved pocket in the ordinary manner, the eyed ends of the needles projecting beyond the top, (see Figsl and 2,) or the papers of pins being fixed in the pocket, as shown by Fig. .3, and by the pockets standing upright when the case is opened, the needles or pins can very readily be removed or replaced.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the modification, in which the pocket is kept upright when the case is open by four folding gussets, D D D D at the ends of the pocket, which are fixed to the pocket and to the case. WVhen the case is folded, the said gussets bend inwardly at (Z and lie flat against the sides of the case.
My invention can be applied to those needle or pin cases which have two or more pockets, similarly as above described and illustrated with reference to pin or needle cases having but one pocket.
hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A needle or pin case consisting of the outer inclosing-casing, the supporting-pieces extending upwardly therefrom, and a pocket for the reception of the needles or pins, said pocket being located between the supporting-pieces, the edges of which are secured to the pocket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
