UNITED STATES PATENT CARROLL H. REED, OF NEY YORK, N. Y.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR BOXES, CARD-CASES, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,477, dated December 17, 1895.
Application filed May 9, 1895. Serial No. 548,642. (No model.)
To all whom it nut/y concern:
Be it known that I, CARROLL H. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Boxes, Gard-Cases, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to boxes, pocketbooks, card-cases, and similar articles, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective fastening devicefor such articles, whereby when the box, case, pocket-book, or other article has been closed'it will remain closed till intentionally opened, and will not come open accidentally.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a cardboard box provided with my improved lock or fastening Fig. 2, a section on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar section with the box open; Fig. 4:, a view similar to that of Fig. 1, showing a pocketbook or card-case; Fig. 5, a section on the line y y thereof, and Fig. 0 a View of the pocket-book or card-case with both sides open.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, I employ an ordinary pasteboard or cardboard box A, having one side, as I, hinged or flexibly connected therewith, as at C, and provided with an extension D, which overlaps the side E, and the entire box may be formed of a single piece cut or stamped from a sheet of cardboard or other material, in the usual manner. The extension D is provided with a slot F and a strip G, between the slot and the edge thereof, and the side E has secured thereto, on the inner side thereof, a tongue II, provided with a base-piece H, preferably of the form shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,.said piece of the tongue being pasted or otherwise secured to the side piece on the inner side, as shown in Figs. and 4, and the tongue H is passed through a slot J, formed in the side piece E, as shown. In looking or fastening the parts together the tongue H is passed over the strip G of the extension D and through the slot F, formed therein, as shown in Fig. 2, in which position the extension D will be securely held until the tongue 11 is withdrawn from the slot F.
In the construction shown in Figs. i, 5, and 6, the book or case is formed of any desired materiahleather bein preferred, and a pocket or other receptacle K is secured to one side thereof in the usual manner, or anumber of such pockets may be employed. In this form of device, one side E is provided with a slot J, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 8, and the base H of the tongue 11 is secured on the inner surface thereof and passed through said slot and over a strip G, which forms a part of the extension or flap D, as in said Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and through the slot F, formed in said flap or extension, the only difference between this and the construction shown in the first three figures being in the form of the box, book, or case, the pocket or pockets in the interior thereof, which constitute a feature of the construction shown in Figs. 4, 5, and Gonly, and in the form and arrangement of the side E, which in this construction constitutes simply a folding side or flap, though this is immaterial. I
My improved lock or fastening device for boxes, pocketbooks, card-cases and similar articles is simple in construction and operation, and perfectly adapted to accomplish the object for which it is intended, and does not add, materially, to the cost of the article to which it is applied.
Having fully described my invention, its construction and operation, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a box, or similar article, having a side as B, knged thereto, an extension as D, on said side, said extension being provided with a slot as F, a strip as G, intermediate of said slot in the edge of the extension, a side as E, having a slot as J therein, and a tongue having a base piece H,
ence of two witnesses, this 1st day of May, 1895.
CARROLL H. REED.
