BOX-FASTENER.
SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,507, dated April 6,1886.
Application filed January 27, 1886. Serial No. 189,964. (Xo model.)
To MZ zul/tomI 11i-111,1 concern.;
Be it known that I, JULIUs Tnnonon NBII-1E, of the city of Herford, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to tbe letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to the fastening of boxes, and more particularlyr to the fastener of cigar-boxes.
The object of the said invention is to provide fasteners which may be readily applied to boxes without using tools for the purpose, and which allow of 'being readily opened and adjusted according to the pressure which may be exerted within the boxes by the contents of the saine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of part of a cigarbox provided with a fastener constructed according to iny invention. Figi 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line sa fr, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a box provided with the improvements, and showing the same open. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate strips of metal forming the ties employed in my improved fastener. Figs. 7, S, 9, and l0 are views illustrating details of the invention; and Fig. l1 is a perspective View showing the slotted cover and front board of the box with part of the ties broken away.
E designates a common cigar-box, to which the cover C is hinged in the usual manner, the said cover being provided with two parallel slots, l and 2. The front board D of the box is also 'provided with two parallel slots, 3 and el, arranged at right angles to the slots in the cover C, so that planes laid through the slots 3 and .twould nearly, butnot quite, touch the ends or" the slots l and 2.
A. and B designate flexible and thin, but at the same time strong and resistible, strips of metalpreferably brass. The end a of the strip A is passed through the slot l in the cover C sufficiently far, as shown in Fig. 7, to allow of being bent upward and passed `from below through the other slot, 2, (see Fig. 8,) whereupon it is bent down upon the surface of the cover between the two slots, and the strip A with its free end a drawn forward and firmly laid over the same. (See Fig. 9.) In a similar manner the two ends b of the metal strip B are passed through the slots 3 and 4 y in the front board D, and after being firmly pulled bent against the inner surface of the board D, as clearly shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3 of the drawings. Il', now, the box E is to be closed and fastened, the cover C, Fig. 4, is brought down to bear upon the upper rim of the board D, and the free end a' of the metal strip A is pushed through the narrow intermediate space between the said board and the interior surface of the strip B. (See Fig. 2.) The said strip is then bent outward against the lower edge of the strip B, as shown in Fig. l, and then upward against the outside of the strip B, whereby the cover C is secured in position, as shown in Fig. of the drawings. rEhe side boards of the box E can also be slotted and secured to the cover by means of the strips A and B, as before described.
To loosen the fastener, it is simply necessary to bend down again the end o. of the strip A, and the cover can then be raised. It will be seen that the fastener readily allows of being tightened or slaekened, as may be required, in case of shrinkage or expansion of the cigars contained in the boX E, and that it will resist the pressure within the box caused bythe said expansion.- The strips protrude only very slightly beyond the inner surfaces of the cover and front or side boards, so that, practically, no storage space within the box is lost.
lt will be readily understood that instead of providing the slots 3 4 and the strip B in the front or side boards D, and the slots 1 2 andthe strip Ain the cover C, the arrangement of said slots and their respective fasteningstrips may be reversed without departing from the nature of my invention, which arrangement requires no further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
` rEhe combination, with the front or side boards of a box, or both, slotted as described, and provided with a strip or strips of flexible metal, of the cover C, also slotted, as described, and provided with a strip or strips of met-a1, the correspondin@ strips on the l front or sides andeover being;J united by bend- JULIUS THEODOR XVEIHE' 5 ing one over the other, substantially as and Vtnesses:
for the purpose specified. ROBERT R. SCHMIDT,
to thisspeceabion in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
In testimony whereof have signed my name B. ROI.
