'NiT nn STATES EDWARD HARRIS, OF OAMBRIA, XVISOONSIN.
BOX -FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,812, dated February 9, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, EDWARD HARRIS, of Cambria, in the county of Columbia and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Box-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for fastening covers on boxes, especially on egg-cases, in such a manner that the covers are held securely, and can be fastened or unfastened easily and rapidly.
The invention consists in the combination, with a box-cover, of a U-shaped wire or key of other material held in one end piece of the cover, and adapted to be passed through a slot in the corresponding endpiece of the box, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation ofa box provided with my improved coverfastener. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 3 is an end View of the box. Fig. 4 is an end View of part of the cover. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional plan view of part of the box and end part of the cover.
The box-cover A has two end pieces, B and O, of which the latter has an aperture, D, adapted to receive a pin, E, projecting from the end of the box G near the top edge, and the end piece B has a corresponding aperture, F.
In that end piece of the box against which the end piece B rests a slot, H, is formed, extending from the aperture F toward one side of the box. A recess, J, is formed in the inner surface of the end piece B, to coincide with the slot H. A U-shaped or bent wire or key, K, is passed through the aperture F in the end piece B.
To secure and fasten the cover, it is placed on the box in such a manner that the pin E passes into the aperture D, and then the cover is dropped upon the cleats on the ends of the box, the inner shank of the key K being in the recess or groove J. Vhen the cover is in place, the key is pushed inward and turned in such a manner that the prongs project downward, as shown in Fig. 1.
To u nfasten the cover, the key is turned to the right to bring the prongs in a horizontal position, and then the key is withdrawn. The device holds the cover in place, and is not apt to become disengaged accidentally.
If desired, the pin E and aperture D may be dispensed with, and I may use the U shaped key in both ends of the box and cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the box G, having a slot, H, in one end piece, of the cover A,
having an end piece, B, provided with they aperture F, groove or recess J, and the U- shaped key K, held in the said end piece B, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the box G, having the slot H in one end piece and the pin E on the other, of the cover A, having an aperture, D, in its end piece 0, and an aperture, F, and groove or recess J in its end piece B, and the U shaped key K, held in the end piece B, substantially as herein shown and described.
EDWARD HARRIS.
