MEANS FOR SECURlNG BOX COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,276, dated May 27, 1884.
(Model) which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. M
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our new and improved box and cover, the cover being shown removed from the box. Fig. 2 is a seetional elevation of the box, showing the cover in place upon the box and locked; and Fig. 8 shows a modified form of claw-plate used upon the cover for holding it in place upon the box.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
The body A of the box is of ordinary construction, except that the end pieces or boards, a a, are cut away at their upper edges, as shown at b b, and that one of the side pieces or boards 0 is cut away at cl to form the locking-shoulder or offset 0, with which the free end of the spring f engages for locking the cover B in place upon the body A of the box. The side board 0 is also cut away at its outer surface, as shown at g, to afford access to the free end of the lockingspring f for lifting it above the offset 6 when it is desired to remove the cover B from the box.
In the cut-away places I) Z) are secured the headed pins or screws h h, with which the claw-plates i, secured to the under surface of the cover B, are adapted to engage for holding the cover B securely in place upon the body A. The upper ends of the screws or pins h stand flush or nearly flush with the upper edges of the end pieces or boards, a a, and side boards, a 0, so that when the cover B is removed they will not interfere with the placing of a glass cover or frame over the box for exhibit ing the goods contained in the box.
The claw-plates 2' may be stamped out of sheet metal and secured to the under side of the cover B in proper position by means of small screws or nails, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or they may be made of cast-iron and formed with the beveled claw-opening i, as shown in Fig. 8, of a size adapted to receive and hold the heads of the pins or screws h. The spring f is secured to the under side of the cover B in a suitable recess made at one edge of the cover, and is so arranged that its free end will drop behind the offset or shoulder 0 just at the time the claw-plate r fairly receives the screws h, so that the spring will prevent all backward movement of the cover B, and thus cause the headed pins h and claw-plate '5 to securely hold the cover B upon the box without other fastenings. 1
This box is adapted for many purposes, but it is more especially intended for the use of biscuit and soap manufacturers who usually charge the boxes to their customers and have them returned to be again filled, and for this use the box has special advantage, since much time and labor is saved in removing and replacing the cover, and all driving and drawing of nails, with the consequent danger of splitting the cover and the edges of the box, is obviated.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The box A, provided with headed pins h on its upperedges, and formed with an offset, 0, at the upper edge of one of its side pieces, in combination with the cover 13, provided with plates t, having open slots therein, and the locking spring f on the under side of the lid, and arranged to engage the offset 6 when the cover is in place, substantially as set forth.
2. The box A, the end pieces of which are cut away on their upper edges at I), headed screws or pins h within said cut-away portions, and the offset 0, formed between the end piece and side of the box, as shown, in combination with the cover provided with plates 11, having flaring open slots beveled on their under edges, and the plate-spring f on the under side of the cover at the corner, and constructed to engage the offset when the cover is in place, substantially as set forth.
