HAIR CLIPPERS- HAVING INTERCHANGEABLE COMB PLATES,
May 27, 1958 Filed Sept. 12, 1956 IN V EN TOR.
v W M m M W B Unite HAIR CLIPPERS HAVING INT ERCHAN GEABLE COMB PLATES Mathew Andis, Racine, Wis., assignor to Andis Clipper Co., Racine, Wis., a corporation of Wisconsin Application September 12, 1956, Serial No. 609,458
7 Claims. (Cl. 30-200) provided with a locking slide having marginal notches which selectively align with the sockets to pass the comb plate posts and mis-align with the sockets to engage unnotched portions of the locking slide beneath the headed ends of said posts.
In the latter position of the slide, the comb plate is securely fastened to the clipper case and is operatively associated with the shear blade which is semi-permanently connected to the motor armature and is common to the several interchangeable comb plates. The shear blade remains with the clipper case notwithstanding removal of the comb plate.
, In the device of the present invention the locking slide is disposed between the sockets and it reciprocates longitudinally with respect to the clipper case and bed. The bed has a recessed slideway with guide shoulders which intersect the sockets. The margins of the slide ride against the shoulders and also intersect the sockets, except where they are provided with the notches aforesaid.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the locking slide is provided with a spring which seats in a spring recess ofiset from the path of movement of the locking slide and which biases the locking slide toward its engaged position aforesaid from which it must be manually shifted to release the comb plate.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be more apparent upon an examination of the following disclosure in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken through the head of a hair clipper embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the bed portion of the clipper case, comb plate dowel posts in the bed portion sockets being shown in cross section.
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the inside mating surface of the comb plate.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 3 but with the locking slide and dowel posts removed.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking slide.
The clipper case 10 has a conventional motor (not shown) and armature 8 to which the driving arm 11 of the shear blade 12 is connected. Arm 11 drives the blade 12 through a conventional articulate coupling 13.
The case 10 has a bed portion 14 provided with sockets 15 spaced laterally of the medial centerline of the clipper case and bed. Comb plate 16 exemplifies one of several States Patent 3 interchangeable comb plates which are of different thickness and tooth spacing. Plate 16 has upstanding dowel posts 17 with headed ends 18 and shanks 19 of reduced thickness. The posts 17 may be screw threaded at 22 into the comb plate 16.
Between sockets 15 bed 14 isprovided with a slideway 23 in which the locking slide 24 may reciprocate in a longitudinal direction as aforesaid. The shoulders 25 of the slideway intersect the sockets 15, the margins of the locking slide 24 being provided with notches 26 of the same curvature as the sockets 15 and which selectively align and misalign with said sockets depending on slide position.
The slide 24 is provided with a coil spring 27 having ends 28 anchored to the underface of the slide. The bed 14 is also provided with a spring housing recess 31 just beneath and laterally ofiset from the path of slide movement and in which the spring 27 seats with its single coil engaged with the end wall 32. Accordingly, slide 24 is biased by spring 27 to its position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 in which a handle portion of the slide projects from the head of the clipper case.
From its position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the slide 24 may be moved against the bias of its spring 27 to a position in which the notches 26 align with the sockets 15, thereby permitting posts 17 on the comb plate 16 to pass through the sockets. When fully seated the headed ends 18 of the post 17 are beyond the plane of slide reciprocation so that upon release of finger pressure spring 27 returns the slide to its position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 in which the notches 26 are misaligned with the sockets 15 and unnotched marginal portions of the slide lock beneath the enlarged heads 18 of the post 17. Accordingly, the comb plate 16 is securely locked in position, subject to easy release simply by forcing the slide 24 by finger pressure to its position in which the notches 26 align with the sockets 15, whereupon the posts are free for withdrawal from the sockets.
The clipper case bed 14 is provided with a tapped aperture 33 which receives the bolt 34 which projects through a slot 35 in the locking slide 24 and which is elongated in the direction of slide movement. Bolt 34 has an enlarged head 36 which engages over the marginal portions of the locking slide adjacent the aperture, thus to hold the locking slide and the comb plate 16 securely attached to the bed. Bolt 34 has a shoulder 37 which engages the bed 14, the spacing between shoulder 37 and head 36 being just slightly greater than the combined thickness of the slide 44 and recess 27. Accordingly, the locking slide 24 is free to slide in its guideways but is held securely to the bed.
I claim:
1. In a hair clipper having interchangeable comb plates, the combination with a clipper case having a bed portion with laterally spaced post sockets therein, of a removable comb plate having means for mounting it on said clipper case in position for operative engagement with a shear blade and comprising correspondingly spaced posts projecting therefrom, said posts having headed ends, a locking slide mounted on said bed between said sockets for sliding movement longitudinally of said bed, said locking slide having side margins with notches therein which align with said sockets in one position of slide adjustment to pass the headed ends of said comb plate posts into said sockets and which are misaligned with said sockets in another position of loci-L- ing slide adjustment to interlock unnotched slide portions beneath the headed ends of said posts to lock said comb plate to said bed.
2. The device of claim 1 in which said bed is provided with guideway shoulders intersecting said sockets and '3 against which the margins guided. V
3. The device of claim 1 in which said bed has a recess laterally offset from said sliding plate, said locking a slide being provided with a spring disposed in'said recess and biasing said slide toward its said other position.
4. The device of claim 3 in" which said locking slide has an aperture elongated in the direction of its sliding movement, a mounting bolt extending through said aper ture and through said spring recess, said bolt having a shoulder engaging the bed at the bottom of the recess and a head marginally engaged over the locking slide.
5. In a hair clipper having interchangeable comb plates, the combination with a clipper case having a bed portion with laterally spaced post sockets therein, a motor,=a shear blade and means mounting said shear blade on said motor, of a removable comb plate having means for releasably mounting it on the clipper case in 7 position for operative engagement with a shear blade and including correspondingly spaced posts projecting of the locking slide are l therefrom,,said posts having headed ends, a locking slide 2 mounted on said bed for reciprocation longitudinally thereof and on a path which istransverse to a line connecting said sockets, said locking slide having side mar gins intersecting said post sockets and having notches which align'with said sockets in one position of slide adjustment'to pass'sockets in one position of slide adjustment to pass the headed ends of said comb plate posts into said sockets and which are misaligned with said sockets in another position of slideadjustrnent to interlock unnotched slide portions beneath the headed ends of said posts whereby to lock said comb plates to said bed.
6. The device of claim 5 in further combination with spring means biasing said locking slide toward its said other position, said bed being provided with a recess beneath said slideand in which said spring isdisposed.
7. The device of claim 6 in which said locking slide is provided with an aperture elongated in the direction of its sliding movement, and a mounting bolt extending through said aperture and through said spring recess, said bolt having a shoulder engaging the bed at the b ottom of the recess and having a head marginally engaged over portions of said locking slide adjacent said elongated aperture. 7
