Other objects of this invention, will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope. of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention.

Referring in detail to the drawings7 -10 designates a'portion. of the body'of a brief case, bag or other like article having a ilexible flap cover 11. Said flap 11 is provided with hasp 12 having a latch bolt or stud 13 adapted to coact with mechanism 14 mounted on the body for locking and unlocking said flap cover. y
Said hasp 12, as here shown, comprises a portion 18 of said flap 11. A pronged extension 19 integral with said rear wall 17, piercesV the flap portion 18, extends thru an opening 20 in frontwall 16, andy is then bent back to tightly clamp the walls 16, 17 to said flap. Riveted to the rear wall 17 as at 21 and extending outwardly therefrom is the latch bolt or stud 13. Said stud is slotted or grooved as at 22 to provide a hook portion 23, and is further formed with oppositely inclined cammed surfaces 24, and 25. Extending at right angles to the hook portions 23 is a wall 26 providing an abutment surface 27 for a purpose hereinafter appearing.
rlhe locking and releasing mechanism 14 with which the stud 13 cooperates, comprises a casing 30 having a front wall 31 and a skirted wall 32 extending rearwardly therefrom and having edge Contact with said body portion 10. For attaching said casing to said body 10, a plate 33, positioned within said casing 30, is provided with bent arms 34 riveted as at 35 to the front wall 31. Said plate 33 is spaced from said front wall 31 to provide an intervening chamber 36. Extending rearwardly from said plate 33 are a plurality of pairs of aligned prongs 37 extending thru said body portion 19 and bent inwardly as at 38 to firmly secure the plate and casing to said body portion.
Said plate 33 and front face 31 of casing 30 are formed with a plurality of aligned similar slots 39, 39 respectively for receiving the latch stud 13. Said slots are preferably L sliaped,'havinga portion 40 for receiving the hook portion 23, and a portion 41 for receiving the wall 26 of said stud, said latter portion 41', presenting an edge 42 `adapted to abut surface 27 of said wall 26.
Pivotally mounted on a pin 44 fixed to front `wall 31 and plate 33, and housed within chamber 36, is a locking and releasing plate member 45. A wire vspi-ing 46 secured to said member at one end and engaging a lug 47 integral with plate 33 at its opposite end,
' normally maintains said member in locking a cammed edge 52 adapted to coaet with apin 54 extending from said portion 49. A
knob 55 secured to the outerfendl of said shaftY provides an actuating handle for rotating said `shaft 48 to cause pivotal movement of member against the pressure ot said spring 46.
Said lnember 45 is formed with a substantially oblong longitudinal slot 56, providing a pair of opposite edge portions 57 and 58. Said edge portions arey bevelledor cammed as at 57 and 58 respectively7 on the face of said member45 adjacent Wall 31 ot the casing, for a purpose hereinafter appearing. The Width of the slot 56, or the distance between the edges 57 and 58 is substantially equal to the width of the stud 13 to permit the latter to pass thru said slot during the locking and releasing operations.
The operation of thedevice Will now Ibe apparent. To lock the brief case, the flap 11, and the attached hasp 12 is moved to a proper position for aligning the stud latch 13 with any one of the slots 39, depending on the adjustment desired, The hasp may then be pushed against the casing 30 to forcethe stud latch thru the aligned slots 39, 39', the cammed surface 24 of said stud coacting With the cammed surface 57 of the'edge portion 57 during this operation, to rotatethe mem-'- ber 45 about piny 44 against the pressure ot'` spring 46. Once the hook portion 23 of the stud is past the edge 57, member 45 snaps back into normal position, said edge 57 entering slot 22 for preventing removal of said stud and retaining the flap 11 in closed condition. This position is illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
Any suitable means such as combination controlled mechanism (not shown) may be provided for preventing actuation of the knob to unlocking position. When such mechanism is not provided, to unlock the fiap 11, it is merely necessary to rotate the knob 55 to the position shown in Fig. 5. During this operation, member 45 is rotated clock- Wise (looking at Fig. 5), or to the right (looking at Fig. 6), edge portion 57 moving out of groove 22 to release the hook 25. When said edge 57 has moved out of said slot 22,
to disengage said hook 23, the opposite cammed 'edgelportion 58 strikes the cammedv surface 25 and forces the stud latch 13 outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 6.
Thus, not only is the latch released but the entire hasp and therefore the flap l1 are moved outwardly to open position, and subsequent release of the knob 55 will not again lock the device since the stud is entirely removed from the locking mechanism. It will be noted that during the unlocking operation,
Wall 26 of said stud abuts the edge 42 of slot 39 and said stud being thereby guided direct ly outwardly'without danger of the hook 23 catching the under surface' of the casing Wall 3l.
Although the drawings show the lock applied sto a brief case, or the like, it will be understood that the hasp 12 may be pivoted to a trunk cover or that of any other article applied `to any otherfsuitable closure member.
It willv thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is Welly adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various. changes might be made in the embodiment. set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as killustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention l claimas'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
' l. In a lock, in combination, a latch bolt, means forengaging saidbolt to retain the same in locked condition, means for actuating said engaging means to release said bolt, and means associated With said engaging means for moving the bolt out of lockedposition.
2. In a lock,.in combination with a hasp having a latch bolt, aslotted member for reeeivingsaid bolt, means for engagin said bolttoretain the same in locked con ition, means for actuating said `engaging means to releasesaid bolt, and means associated with said engaging means, for forcing said bolt outwardly from said slotted member.
3. In a lock, in combination with a hasp having a latch bolt, a casing having a slot for receiving .said bolt, means for engaging said bolt to retain the same in locked condition, means for'actuating said engaging means `to release said bolt,- and means associated with said engaging means, for forcing said bolt outwardly with respect to said casing slot.
4. In a lock, in combination with a hasp having a latch bolt, a casinghaving an opening for receiving said bolt, keeper means forr saidv latch to prevent removal thereof from said casing Yand means for successively releasing said bolt and ejecting the same'out of saidfopening;
5. In alock, in combination Witha hasp having a latch bolt, a casing having an open# ing for receiving said bolt, means for interengaging said bolt to prevent removal thereof from said casing, means for successively releasing said bolt and ejecting the same out of said opening, and means associated rWith said bolt and casing for guiding said bolt during movement thereof out of said openmg.

In a lock, in combination with a hasp having a latch bolt, a casing having an opening for receiving said bolt, means for interengaging said bolt to prevent removal therei of from said casing, said means comprising a member movable Within said casing and having an opening for receiving said bolt, said member being provided With a cammed portion adapted to coact With said bolt to eject the latter from said casing.
8. In a lock, in combination With a hasp having a latch bolt, a casing having an opening for receiving said bolt, means for interengaging said bolt to prevent removal thereof from said casing, and means for successively releasing said bolt and ejecting the same out of said opening, said bolt having a surface adapted to abut an edge of said casing at said opening during said ejecting operation.
9. In a lock, in combination with a stud having a hook portion, a member having an opening to receive said stud, and a plate movable relative to said member, said plate having a pair of edge portions, one of said portions being adapted to engage said hook portion to prevent removal of said stud from said member, said other edge portion having a portion adapted to coact with said stud to eject the latter from said opening upon movenient of said plate.

In a lock, in combination with a stud having a hook portion, a member having an opening to receive said stud, and a plate movable relative to said member, said plate being provided With a pair of edge portion, one of said portions being adapted to engage said hook portion to prevent removal of said stud from said member, said other edge portion having a portion adapted to coact With said stud to eject the latter from said opening upon movement of said plate, said stud having a surface adapted to contact an edge portion of said member during said ejecting movement.
