The invention relates to door locks and particularly to door locks for sliding doors.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a lock which is provided with simple, effi cent, and positively operating double levers having jaws, which is composed of few and simple parts arranged in such a manner as to permit easy access to the lock from one side of the door and which must be operated by a key from the opposite side of the door to spread the levers and permit the door to be opene Another object is to provide a new and improved lock composed of few and simple parts including a pair of jawed levers having complementary engagement with each other whereby movement of one lever will move the other lever, and associated with a relatively simple cylinder key-controlled device.
Numerous other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the progress of the following specification.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a selected embodiment of the invention and the views therein are as follows:
Fig. l is a detail front elevation showing the improved lock mounted on a sliding door and cooperating with a keeper element.
Fig. 2 is a detail front view of the improved lock having the front plate removed.
Fig. 3 is a detail end elevation looking in the direction of the arrows 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The improved lock herein shown comprises a casing member 5 having a supporting plate 6 and a front plate 7. The casing is adapted to be mounted on a sliding door 8 which slides against a partition member 9. Side and end walls 10 and 11 respectively may be integrally formed on the supporting plate 6, Fig. 2, the front side Wall 19 being omitted to permit the jawed upper and lower lever arms 12 and 18 respectively to extend through the end of the casing.
These lever arms are provided with openings 14 at their inner ends which engage studs 15 formed on the inner face of the supporting plate 6. The lever arms 12 and 13 are thus pivotally mounted on the supporting plate and are urged toward each other by means of upper and lower springs 16 and 17. The upper spring 16 engages the upper end wall 11 and the side of the lever arm 12 and urges the lever 12 downwardly. A spacer member 19 may be integrally cast on the supporting plate 6 and is arranged between the levers 12 and 13 to keep them spread apart a predetermined distance.
A cylinder lock 20 is arranged between the levers 12 and 13, the levers being provided with inner annular surfaces 21 to provide suflicient room for the cylinder lock 20. The cylinder lock is operated by a key and carries a tongue 22 which is movable when the proper key is inserted in the key slot or hole 23.
A screw 24 threadedly engages the spacer memher-l9 and engages the cylinder 20 to prevent revoluble movement thereof. V
The levers l2 and 13 have complementary en- 65 gagement with each other, the member 12 having its rear end provided with a notch 25 .in which .a projecting tooth or finger 26 on the end ofthe lever 13 engages. Thus, it will be seen that when one of the levers is moved, the other lever will also be moved. v
Each lever has a curved end portion 27 providing jaws which are adapted to engage the ends of an arrow-shaped keeper member 28. This keeper member is fixed to the partition and is $5 engageable by the ends of the levers 12 and 13. When the door is moved to closed position, the keeper member 28 will force the levers 12 and 13 apart and then lock behind the locking edges 29 of the keeper 28. In order to unlock the de- 1 vice, which consists in spreading the levers apart, the handle 18 may be operated from one side of the door, or the tongue 22 may be operated by a key. When a key is inserted in the slot 23 and rotated therein, the tongue member 3 22 will be rotated from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to the position shown in dotted lines when it engages the inner face of the lever 13 to spread the two levers apart.
The front plate 7, Fig. l, is provided with an 13 opening 30 therein to provide a hand hole across which a part of the handle or arm 18 extends. Thus, the lock may be opened from the inside by merely pushing the arm 18 to the left, Fig. 2, when the jaws will be spread apart. Outward 5 movement of one jaw lever moves the cooper-- ating jaw lever outwardly in the opposite direction inasmuch as the jaw levers are complementally engaged at their outer ends and are pivotally mounted on the studs 15. '100 At the juncture of the side and end walls excess material is provided to form abutments 31 which have threaded openings 32 provided therein for the reception of screws 33 for fastening the plate 7 against the supporting plate 6 and to complete the casing 5. g
The invention provides a lock composed of few and simple rigid parts mounted in a particular manner and having complementary env gagement whereby pressure exerted against one lever will operate the other lever to spread both .)f the levers and free them from a keeper member and out of locking engagement.
Changes may be made in the form, construction, and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the. right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A look comprising a casing having an opening in one side thereof, a pair of locking levers pivoted to said casing, complementary means on said levers whereby movement of one of said levers will spread said levers to unlocked position, independent spring means engaging each lever for urging said levers toward each other toward locked position, a stop member between the levers and engaged by at least one of said levers for holding the levers apart a predetermined distance, and an arm arranged inside of the casing and integral with one of said levers formanually operating the look through the opening in the casing.
2. A look comprising a casing, a pair of levers pivoted to said casing, means engaging said levers whereby movement of one of said levers will spread said levers to unlocked position, means for urging said levers toward each other, a stop member for holding the levers apart a predeter- .mined distance, an arm integral with one of said i levers for manually operating the lock on one side of the casing, and key controlled means operable from the other side of the casing and engaging one of said levers for spreading said levers to unlocked position.
3. A lock comprising a casing,-a lever pivoted to said casing and having a slot therein, a second lever pivoted to said casing, a finger on said sec- 0nd lever and engaging the slot in the first lever, means engageable with each of said levers for urging the levers toward each other, means for holding the levers spaced apart, and means on one of said levers and engageable from one side of the casing for spreading said levers apart when said last named means is moved and a key controlled member mounted on the other side of said casing and engaging one of said levers for spreading said levers to unlocked position.
4. A look comprising a lever having inner and outer ends, the inner end of said lever being pivoted to the casing and having a recess provided therein, a second lever having inner and outer ends, the inner end of said second lever being pivoted to said casing, a projection on the inner end of said second lever and engaging the recess in the first lever, locking jaws at the outer ends of said levers and adapted to engage a keeper, spring means engaging said levers for urging the levers together to locked position for engagement with said keeper, a lug on said casing between said levers for holding the locking jaws a predetermined distance apart, an arm integral with one lever, said casing having an opening in one side thereof whereby access may be had to said arm for moving said arm, movement of said arm causing movement of both of said levers,
and key controlled means arranged in the other side of said casing and adapted for engagement with one of said levers for operating one of said levers to spread the locking jaws of said levers.
