Description

J.KURZ. BOX PROTECTOR.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII E0. 5, 1911.

WIN/E8858 i. a J v fi BY "(v M I fl- 12$? S TES JOSEPH KURZ,
iii
NEW Yoga Nix.
nox-rno rncr on.
To all whoifi it may concern:
4363 it known that I, JOSEPH KURZ, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of the present invention is a A 'protecting device especially intended for edges of the box during the handling 9 transportation of the same.
Other objects and advantages w map parent from the following description and it will be understood that anges in the specific structure shown fi e} described may be made within thescope of the invention without departing" from the spirit thereof.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals of ref erence indicate similar parts in the several -views, Figure 1, shows the device in position ready to be applied to a box. Fig. 2, is a side view showing the device applied to a box before the final locking. Fig. 3. shows the device in side view applied to a box.
Fig. 4c. is a perspective view of the box-protector according to the present invention.
Referring now particularly to the drawing: 10 represents a box of any well known material, construction or form. The boxprotector or lock, of sheet metal, or any other suitable material consists of two n1embers, one of which comprises two leaves, 11 and 16, at a right angle to each other, while the other member 12, consists of a fiat plate provided with a suitable recess 14, the Walls Siiec ification of Letters Patent. Appfieation filed December 5, 1911. Serial No. 663,997.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
of which form guides 15, adapted to slidingly receive the leaf 16. Said leaf 16, is provided with suitable slots 17 adapted to allow the passage of suitable fastening nails 18, provided as shown in the neighborhood of their points with barbed hooks 19.
The inner edge of the leaf 16 in its center is provided with a projection 20, adapted to enter a correspondingly formed recess 21 of the leaf 12. As shown in the figures, said projection is formed with teeth 22 at its outer edges adapted to inter-lock with oppositely disposed teeth 23 of the recess 21.
In use, the member 12 is first fastened to the box by driving suitable nails, of the character described into the box-lid while leaf 11 is still withdrawn from the box.
Thereafter nails of a similar kind as mentioned above, are dW so as enter e des of the box and the l af 6 s d YMto therecess 14 of leaf 12 untll the gnojection 2O enters the locking re- Wd the teeth of projection and recess nterlock so as to positively prevent a withdrawal of leaf 11. Thus an absolutely secure locking of the box is effected and any intent to fraudulently open the box and remove goods therefrom is positively frustrated as the box can only be opened by breaking the sides, cover or bottom thereof.
While the device is particularly adapted for wooden boxes of ordinary construction used principally for the shipment of goods of various descriptions it is apparent that the device can also be effectively used for locking boxes of any material into Which nails may be readily driven.
Having thus described my invention .that what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising two members, one consisting of a flat plate adapted to be secured to the lid of a box, and the other of two leaves at a right angle to each other, one of said leaves being adapted to be secured to the side of a box, and the other leaf slidably engaging the fiat plate, means for securing the members to the lid and side of a box, respectively, and means for interlocking the two members when secured to the box.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising two members, one of which is provided with a guiding recess and with a toothed i ecess, the other member consisting 5 of two parts atwright angle to each other, one of said parts slidinglyengaging in said guiding recess and providedwvith, a toothed projection to engage in said toothed recess,
and means for securing the two members to the lid and side of a box, respectively.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
