SOL STONE, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
PAPER BOX.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISOLSTONE, (who has made application for citizenship of the United States,) residing at San Diego, in, the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to paper boxes and it more particularly relates to an improved form of combined handle and fastener therefor.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a box of this character in which is combined the maximum of convenience and the minimum of expense.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box of this character in which an article may be placed and delivered in the least possible time and which eliminates the necessity for wrapping the box, under ordinary conditions; thus effecting a great saving of time and wrapping materials and enabling a salesman to wait upon more customers than could be otherwise accomplished.
In the accompanying drawings which supplement this specification. Figure 1 is a view of a form of box embodying my invention, in open position. Fig. 2 is a view of the box in closed position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the middle portion of the box and through the combined handle and fastening element. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, the section being taken on line 44, Fig. 8.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 5 denotes the body of a box provided with the longitudinal side flanges 7 and the transverse end flanges 8 which are preferably formed from a single blank of mate-- rial, while one of such flanges 7 has integrallv produced therewith the cover 6, the material being suitably flexed so as to form a hinge joint, as is believed to be selfevident. The cover 6 is provided along its free longitudinal marginal portion with the flange 6 while the end marginal portions of such cover 6 are provided with the flanges 6', the flanges 6 and ('3' being adapted to interlap with the flanges 7 and 8 of the body 5 when the cover is adjusted into a closed position, as is a well known expedient and which is believed to be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains. The body 5 and the cover 6 adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.

ing positioned in close proximity to the flanges 7 and 6 of the body 5 and the cover 6, respectively, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings.
A combined handle and locking member 10 is formed from a single sheet of pasteboard, or other suitable material and is provided with elongated slots or apertures 10 at its opposite ends, while between each slot 10 and the middle portion of the member, the sheet is bent transversely, in two places, so as to bring the apertured end sections together, so that a persons finger may be passed through the registering slots 10. The middle section of the plate 10 may be either loosely or fixedly seated, (preferably the latter,) to the flange (3 so that when the box is packed and being closed, the inwardly extendmg end section 10 may be passed through the slot 5 at the base of the side wall 7. Now, it will be seen that the member 10 embraces the side wall 7 and the side flap 6 between the end sections 10 so that when a persons fingers are engaged with the handle elements 10 the box is held securely together while being carried. Moreover, if it is desired to seal the box, this is easily accomplished by passing any suitable sealing device around the handle elements 10", so that the delivery boys and others cannot tamper with the contents of the box without danger of detection.
It is obvious that a box of this character is of maximum convenience, both to the merchants and to the customer, and is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects, previously specified, in a thoroughly practical manner.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
That I claim is The combination with a box having a cover, said box and cover being provided with flanges at their marginal portions adapted to overlap when in closed relation, said box and cover being provided with slots therethrough immediately adjacent the flanges at their forward ends, suchs lots being adapted to aline when the cover is ad:
justed into closed position, of a wide strip of flexible material removably directed through such apertures when in alined posi tion and adapted to bear against the inner surface of one of the flanges, such strip being of a length greater than the width of the box and having its extremities projecting beyond the opposite sides thereof, each of such extremities being provided with a transverse opening so that the fingers oi a person may be engaged with said strip whereby such strip affords a locking means and a carrying means.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SOL STONE.
