SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,710, dated June 13,

Be it known that 1, CHARLES MAGNUsoN, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great 'Britain, residing at St. John, county of St.'
John, Province of New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use'the same.
My invention relates to improvements inv envelops, and has particular relation to that class of such devices known as safety-envelops.
The object of my invention is to provide an envelop which can be readily closed and which can be secured in such manner that tampering therewith will be readily seen and detected.
A further object of my invention is to provide a construction which is neat and attractive in appearance, simple and efficient in operation, and which can be made at a lowcost:
To these and other ends my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views, Figure'1 isa plan view of one 0f-my improved envelops. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form. Fig. 3 is a view showing the blank used in forming the envelop shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 isa view showing the blanks used in forming an envelop similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but without the use of the side-securing tabs. Fig. 5 is a view showing the blank used in forming the envelop shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing the fastening device used in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a sectional View taken on the line '7 7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a sectionalview showing the manner of fastening used in connection with the envelop shown in Fig. 2.
Many varied forms of constructing envelops have heretofore been used, as well as many dierent forms of forming the closing means therefor. Many disadvantages arise in the Serial No. 710,127. (No model.)
construction of most of these, and it is to eliminate these objectionable features therefrom and to form an envelop which will be sealed tightly and in which the openin g thereof can be readily detected that I have provided the construction herein Vshown and described.
The construction shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, which is my preferred form, consists in forming a blank substantially like that shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, consisting of the elongated strip 1, having the extension 2 formed at one end thereof, said extension being adapted to be folded over at the dotted line shown in Fig. 4:, the extension being provided with a coating of mucilage on its side adapted to contact with the face of the blank which is folded thereon, thus securing the parts together. The opposite end of the blank 1 is provided with a iiap, which flap is adapted to pass between the two end portions of the blank 1, the flap being provided with mucilage on a portion of its face, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The blank lis further provided with a slot 4, through which is adapted to be passed a tab 5, secured on the flap 3, the tab 5 being passed through said opening and secured to the face of the envelop by means of mucilage placed on the under face thereof. The manner of closing this envelop consists in rst placing the letter within the body of the envelop and then passing the flap 3 between the two end portions of said envelop, the tab 5 being passed through the opening 4. The mucilage on the flap is wet and the vend of the envelop closed, after which the mucilage on the tab 5 is moistened and the tab pasted down onto the face of the envelop, after which the stamp is secured to the envelop over the tab, by means of `which it will be readily seen that the end portion of the letter is sealed, in addition to which the tab is securely fastened to the blank 1, and the stamp covers the tab and is secured to both the tab and the face of the envelop, thus forming a secure fastening.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 differs from that just described in that the eXtensions 2 are also provided with openings which are adapted to receive the tab 6, secured to the side of the blank, which forms an additional securing means for the side of the envelop.

IThe construction shown in Fig. 5 differs only from that shown in Fig. 4 in that the tab 5 is of greater length, while the opening 4 is not as close to the edge of the blank. The remaining portions of the blank are the same, and in assembling the operation is similar, with the exception that instead of securing the tab 5 to the envelop in the manner shown in Fig-l it is first bent rearwardly and then secured thereon, thus forming a lock against liability of the parts becoming unfastened, the stamp being secured thereon as in the other construction shown. By this construction it will be readily seen that a cheap envelop is formed, one which can be readily constructed and in which the element of safety is found, it being practically impossible to open the envelop Without leaving some traces of such opening.
TWhile I have herein shownA a preferred form of carrying my invention into effect, yet I do not desire to limit myself to such preferred details of construction, but claim the right to use any and all modifications thereof which will serve to carry into eli'ect the objects to be attained by this invention in so far as such modifications and changes may fall within the spirit and scope of my said invention.
I claiml. An envelop comprising a blank adapted to be folded upon itself; extensions formed on' one end thereof, -said extensions extending laterally on opposite sides of said end, said extensions being adapted to be secured to the portion of said envelop doubled upon itself; an openingv formed in said blank at one end thereof; a Hap formed at the opposite end of said blank, said flap being adapted to be secured between the end portions of `Said blank; and a tab secured to said ap, said tab being adapted to pass through said opening and vbe secured to the face of said envelop, said tab being also covered by the postage-stamp aflixed to said envelop, substantially as described.
2. An envelop comprising a blank adapted to be folded upon itself; extensions formed on the side of one end of said blank, said extensions being adapted to be folded upon said blank between the folded portions of said blank; openings formed Within said ex tensions; and tabs secured to the sides of the oppositerend of said blank, said tabs being adapted to pass through said openings and adapted to be secured to said extensions when said envelop is in its closed position, substan tially as described.
