Be it known that I, PHILIP FoRsoHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of whlch the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to envelops; and it contemplates the provlsion of a strong and safe envelop and one which is simple and inexpensive in proportion to the security it is calculated to afford.

The invention also contemplates the provision in an envelop of a peculiar closure, of the metallic-fastener type, embodying such a construction that when the envelop 1s properly closed and subjected to exter1or pressure, it is securely fastened and cannot be opened without mutilating the paper or other material of which the envelop is formed to such an extent as to make it manifest that the envelop has been tampered with.

The invention further contemplates the provision of an envelop embodying such a construction that when the envelop 1s properly closed and fastened, access cannot be gained to the interior of the envelop even when steaming is resorted to to separate those portions of the envelop which I prefer in practice to connect together by adheslve material.

Other advantageous characteristics of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

The envelop is preferably made of one piece of paper, and, as best shown in Fig. 1, comprises a body A, an end flap B, side flaps D and E, tongues G, an end or closure flap I, and a supplemental side flap E The end flap B is provided with slits b and Specification of Letters Patent.

a keeper strap 0 between said slits b, and is also provided with slits (Z (Z and a portion 6 intermediate the same. On the side flaps D and-E and extending from the side edges of the bottom portion h of the end flap B are bottom portions f and g. It will also be noted that said side flaps D and E are provided with slits z' and closure portions j and t2, the latter being arranged at opposite sides of and integral with the closure flap I. The supplemental side flap E has a bottom portion 79 joined to the end of the bottom portion 9 and also has a shallow closure portion 1" arranged opposite and joined to the adjacent end of the closure portion 70. At m in the supplemental side flap E is provided an oblong aperture, designed to be registered with the aperture cl of the end flap B, the aperture Z of the closure flap I and the apertures (Z of the side flaps D an E. The tongues G extend from the bottom portions 7" and g of the side flaps D and E. At this point I would have it understood that while I prefer to employ the supplemental side flap E for reasons which will hereinafter be stated, the said supplemental side fiap E is not essential to the successful practice of my invention, and therefore the said flap E may, when deemed expedient, be omitted without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention.

In making up my novel envelop from the blank shown in Fig. 1, the supplemental flap E is first folded inwardly against the inner side of the side flap E, and the portions 9 and 7c thereof, after which the flaps E and E are folded inwardly against the inner side of the body A, so that the flap E rests between the flap E and the body A, and the bottom or lower end portion 79 of said flap E rests between the port-ions g and it, while the portion 1" on said supplemental flap rests between the top portion Icon side flap E and the closure flap I. The side flap D is then folded inwardly against the outer side of the side flap E, and with that done it will be seen that the bottom portion on said side flap D will rest against the bottom portion 9 of the side flap E while the closure portion j of flap D will rest against the outer side of the closure portion 70 of side flap E. The tongues G which are then opposed or arranged side by side, are then passed through the keeper strap 0 at the inner side of the end flap B, after which the tongues G are passed through the slits 2' in the side flaps D and E, preferably in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 8, in order to enable the tongues to connect and hold the said flaps D and E together. At the proper time the envelop is folded at If so as to superpose bottom portions it p g and f upon the outer side of the side flap D, and also at the proper time the tongues G are passed outwardly through the slit (Z in the end flap B, which latter in the bag as made up is designed to rest at the outer side of the superposed end or bottom portions described and also at the outer side of the side flap D. lVith the flaps and the tongues arranged as stated, relative to the body A, it will be manifest that a strong and durable envelop is formed, and one that is open at one end. The supplemental side flap E serves, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, to cover the portions of the tongues G that otherwise would be exposed to the interior of the envelop, and is desirable and is preferably employed for that reason. The bottom portions h, p, g, and serve when folded upon the outer side of the side flap I), as before described, to prevent access being gained to the lower end of the envelop in the event that those portions of the envelop preferably connected by adhesive are subjected to a steaming or other surreptitious treatment.

It will be noted here that in the made up envelop, the side flap D is pasted to the outer side of the side flap E at such points as are desirable, and that the end flap B is pasted similarly to the outer side of the side flap D; and pasting of the parts being preferably resorted to in order to lend additional security to the envelop, as well as to assure the parts remaining in their proper relative positions until the envelop is put into use and the upper end thereof is closed and fastened.

As best shown in Fig. a, the metallic fastener M comprised in my improvements includes a flat body m having a slot at adapted to be registered with the aperture m in flap E the apertures (Z in the side flaps D and E, and the aperture cl in the end flap B. The fastener M also includes arms or prongs 79, and a keeper arm .9 initially resting at an acute angle to the body wt and having an inturned hook t which terminates in an end portion a directed as shown. The said fastener M is arranged at the inner side of the supplemental side flap E and is connected to the flap E and also to the flaps E, D and B, by the prongs or arms 79 which are extended through the flaps and are bent against the outer side of the flap B, as shown.

The envelop is closed by folding the flap and the closure portions j, and 9" over the end flap B, and passing the apertured end portions of the tongues G, which are preferably pasted together to form a single tongue,

through the registered apertures in the several flaps and also through the slot at in the fastener M. Pressure is then exerted on the flap B, whereupon the hook 6 will be secured in the aperture of the tongues and the tongues will be clamped between the arm 8 and body on, Fig. 3. The inward folding of the portions j, 70 and 1" contributes materially to the secure closing of the upper end of the envelop.

The construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not involve departure from the scope of my invention as defined in the claims appended.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. An envelop formed of a piece of suitable material and comprising a body, an end flap, side flaps arranged between said end flap and the body and having slits, and a tongue extending from one end of one side flap and through the slits of the side flaps and also through the end flap.

2. An envelop formed of a piece of suitable material and comprising a body, an end flap provided with a keeper-strap, an opposite end or closure flap having an aperture, side flaps arranged between the first-named end flap and the body and having slits and also having registered apertures adapted to be registered with the aperture in the secend-named end or closure flap, and a tongue extending from one end of one side flap and passed through the keeper-strap of the firstnamed end flap and also through the slits in the side flaps and adapted to be passed inwardly through the registered apertures in the closure flap and side flaps and to be secured within the envelop.

3. An envelop formed of a piece of suitable material and comprising a body, an end flap provided with a keeper-strap and also provided with a slit and an aperture, an opposite end or closure flap having an aperture adapted to be registered With that of the first named end flap, side flaps arranged at the inner side of the first-named end flap and having slits and also having registered apertures in the end flaps, a supplemental side flap carried by one of the side flaps and disposed between the same and the body and having an aperture registered with those of the side flaps and end flaps, tongues extending from the ends of the side flaps and passed through the keeper-strap of the firstnamed end flap and also through the slits in the side flaps and then out through the slit in said end flap and adapted to be passed inwardly through. the registered apertures in the end and side flaps and supplemental side flap, and a fastener secured within the envelop and adapted when pressed to engage and hold the said tongue.

4. An envelop formed of a piece of suitable material and comprising a body, a lower end flap, an upper end or closure flap having an aperture, side flaps arranged between the lower end flap and the body and having slits and registered apertures and also having lower end portions f and g folded between the lower end flap and the outer of the side flaps, and further having upper end portions j and 70 adapted to be folded between the upper end or closure flap and the outer of the side flaps, and a tongue extending from the lower 15 in the closure flap and side flaps and to be 20 secured within the envelop.
