To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. LUENE- none, a citizen of the United States, residmg at South Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in envelops of the class wherein provision is made for preventing surreptitious access to the envelop, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.

The improved device comprises an envelop having a closure flap equal in width to the body so that when the closure flap is folded upon the envelop its free end or point will be located opposite the lower portion of the body and of the overlapping One of the end flaps of the envelop is provided with adhesive material, so located that when this adhesive material is moistened and the end flap closed it will adhere to the body and form an interior stop at the bot-tom of the envelop to limit the inward movement of the contents and thus form means for inserting a fastening device without danger of mutilating the contents of the envelop.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a view of the blank from which the envelop is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view of the envelop closed, with the contents of the envelop indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

The improved device may be constructed of any desired size and from any suitable material, and it is not desired to limit the invention to envelops of any specific construction, or of any specific material.

For the purpose of illustration a conventional form of envelop is shown and comprises a body 10, end flaps 11-12, a back flap l3 and a closure flap 14:, the closure flap being equal in width to the width of the'body, so that when the envelop is folded as shown in Fig. 2 the point 15 is located adjacent to the bottom line of the body 10, for an object to be hereafter explained. One of the end flaps, for illustration the end flap 11, is provided with a portion of adhesive material represented at 16 upon its inner face near its outer lower corner, so that when the adhesive material is moistened and the end flap folded over upon the body 10 in the usual manner, the adhesive material will adhere to the body next to the juncture of the body and the back flap 13, and thus form a stop to limit the inward movement of the contents of the envelop.

In constructing the improved envelop it will be necessary to form the body somewhat wider than will be required to hold the contents, as will be obvious.

The back flap 18 and the end flap 12 are provided with adhesive material represented at 1718 in the usual form, while the closure flap 14 is likewise provided with adhesive material represented at 19.

In constructing the envelop the adhesive material 16 is moistened and the end flap 11 folded upon the body in the usual manner and pressure applied to cause the adhesive material 16 to adhere to the body, as before described. The other end flap 12 is then folded upon the body with its inner end overlapping the inner end of the end flap 11, and secured thereto by moistening the adhesive material 18. The back flap 13 is then folded upon the overlapped end flaps and secured in position by moistening the adhesive material 17 This places the improved envelop in condition for receiving its con tents, and after the contents are deposited therein the closure flap 14: is folded over upon the super-imposed back and end flaps and sealed in the usual manner. As before stated the adhesive material 16 forms a stop to prevent the contents from moving to the bottom of the envelop, but holds the contents spaced away from the bottom, thus leaving a space between the bottom edge of the contents and the bottom edge of the envelop, and this interval or space is utilized to receive a suitable fastening device, preferably in the form of a clenchable eyelet or like device represented at 20. The adhesive material thus provides means for the insertion of the fastening device without danger of mutilating the contents of the envelop, and is an important feature of the improved device, and adds materially to its value and utility. By this simple means it Will be obvious that an envelop is constructed which effectually protects the contents from surreptitious access. Any attempt to openthe envelop or fracture or mutilate its parts, Will thus be exposed.

' The improved device is simple in construction, can be manufactured Without additional expense over that of an ordinary envelop and adapted for use in connection With any of the various forms or sizes of envelops, or of envelops manufactured of any suitable material.

Holes for the fastening devices may be formed in the envelop by the manufacturer and the envelop furnished to the trade in that shape, or the envelops may be manufactured Without the holes and the latter formed in the envelop by the user When the fasteners are inserted, as preferred.
