To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VERRENIOE MUNGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county .of New I-Iaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in File- Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to file wrappers and more particularly to the fastening means for holding the same closed, and its object is to provide an economical and durable device of this character which can be speedily manipulated and readily adapted to the various prevailing style of wrappers.

I attain these objects in the details of construction and manner of operation set forth in the following description and accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of my file wrapper when closed; Fig. 2, a side view when open; Fig. 3, a plan view of `a fragmentary portion showing the clasp when closed; Fig. 4, a plan view of a fragmentary portion of the under flap; Fig. 5, a transverse section of a fragmentary portion of the upper flap, and Fig. 6, a transverse section of a fragmentary portion showing the clasp when open.

Although my invention may be adapted to various styles of file wrappers for the purpose of illustration I will show the same embodied in the form of a flat vertical le such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in which A is the back, B the upper flap and C the un der flap. When closing the file the flaps B and C fold down overlapping each other to conne the contents D. These lcs are usually made of pasteboard or like material and cut to a size suitable for the particular character of papers intended to be inclosed therein. A metal clip E is fastened to the under flap near its outside edge. This clip is made out of a piece of spring sheet metal folded on itself so as to form a front face 1 and a back face 2. The edge of the front face 1 is provided with an upturned lip 3 and its body portion is slit to form an inwardly projecting tongue 4. The clip E is sprung open and passed through a slit in the outer edge of the under flap C so that its face portions 1 and 2 will embrace the flap and is securely fastened in position by a flat sheet metal plate 6. This plate is provided with projecting prongs 7, 7, 7 which are passed through the flap C and clenched on the underside thereof, one of said prongs being also passed through the slot 5 in the back face 2 of the clip. The tongue 4 may be utilized as shown in Fig. 6 to hold open the mouth of the clip. The edge of the upper flap B opposite the clip is reinforced with a piece of fabric 8, 9 folded around the saine and fastened to the flap by the eyelet 10 leaving a loose eX- tremity 11 on the top side of the flap which latter may be used as a tab.

When it is desired to close the le the flaps B and C are folded down overlapplng each other as shown in Fig. 2. The clip is then grasped in one hand and the tab 11 in the other, and the reinforced edge 8, 9 is passed in under the mouth 3 of the clip by slightly bending the upper flap B. The edge 8, 9 is then forced into the clip in under the tongue 4 as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The le is now securely closed but may be opened again by grasping the tab and clip in the same manner and pulling the same apart. It may be noticed that both the closing and opening operations may be speedily performed and that there are no unsightly projections on the surfaces of the file. It may also be observed that the tongue 4 assists in the clasping operation since it bears down on the surface of the fiap at the eXtreme edge of the latter. Since the clasping elements occupy a very small portion of the edge of the upper flap it leaves this edge free for other uses. In the case of a closed file such as the ordinary envelop it is understood that the under flap being necessarily fastened down it is not a swinging flap.

IVhile I have shown only the preferred embodiment of my invention it is obvious that the same is susceptible to such modification as may come within the scope of the v appended claims.

IVhat I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A file wrapper comprising a pair of overlapping flaps, a folded sheet metal clip attached to one of said flaps and arranged to receive and hold the edge of the other flap, and a tab attached to the other flap for pulling the same into and out of said clip.
