Description

P., A.- HOFFMAN l CLIP POR BANDLESS FILING., ENVELOPES Filed Sept. 14A., 1925 INV'ENTOB ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. l1, 1927.
PETER A LBERT HOFFMAN,
CLIP Fon BANDLEss PATENT OFFICE.
F HASTINGS, MINNESOTA.
FILING ENVELO'PES.
Application filed September 14, 1925. Serial No. 56,344.
rlhis invention relates to clips for filing envelopes or packages and has for an object to provide an improved clip which will hold the envelope in its folded position without the use of bands or other fastening means.
vAnother object of the invention is to vpro'- vide a ling envelope with locking clips formed with pressed down portions present ing abutments capable of readily receiving the thumb or finger nail of Vthe band when the clips are being opened.
In the accompanying drawing- K Figure 1 is a perspective view of a filing envelope with clips embodying the. invention applied thereto. y
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure 1 but with the envelope closed after an appreciable amount of contents have been enclosed.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top view on an enlarged scale of a section of the envelope shown in Figure 1 with the clip appliedl and shown in locked position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through Figure 3 on line 4-4.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the body of the envelope which is provided with end fiaps 2 and 3 of any desired length, preferably of a length as long` or almost as long as the body 1. Extending from the sides of the body 1 are integral sections 4 and 5, each section having a series of creases 6 whereby the sections may be folded at any point as indicated in Figure 2 so as to make a substantially rectangular closure for different quantities of contents.
The outer edge of the section 5 is provided with a flap `7 while the outer edge of the section 4 is provided with an overlapped or folded fla 8 held in a folded position by rivets 9 a d 10, which rivets also extend through the clips 11 and 12. If desired, adhesive could be used also to assist the rivets in holding the flap 8 in folded position.
The eyelets 9 and 10 act as journal members v for the clips 11 and 12 whereby they may be swung in and out as desired, namely, from the position shown in Figure 1 to that shown in Figure 2 or in the opposite direction. When in the position shown in Figures 2, 3 and-4, the body 13 moves into the space 14 between the iiap 8 and section 4 whilethe clamping lpiece 15 moves over or rather under part of section 5 or flap 7 whereby the sections 4 and 5 are connected together. The clip is preferably madeof resilient sheet metal and the clamping piece 15 is bowed downwardly and so positioned as to readily press against section 5 but spring sufficiently. to allowl this section to be positioned as shown in Figure 4.
In forming the clamping section 15, the
bead 16 is provided which presents a hand-V hold to a certain extent but in order to increase the hand-hold, a section 17 is pressed downwardly for forming a shoulder 18 against which the nail of the thumb may be forced when swinging the clip from the position shown in Figure 3 to an outer position as shown in Figure 1. The forming of the shoulder 18 in a 'certain sense causesv the formation of a notch with the shoulder 18 as an abutment whereby the clip may be easily moved Vto an open position. As both the clips 11 and 12 are identical, the 'de,
kscription of clip 11 will apply to clip 12.
What I claim is:
As a new articleof. manufacture, a clip i for bandless filing envelopes, comprising a body having an opening at one end and provided at the other end with a clamping member underlying said end and of a length approximately the width of theV body, said member having an upwardly curved portion connecting it with the body and provided at its junction with said body with an upstanding bead, the body being provided adjacent the bead with a notch having a shoulder at the side next to .the bead.
