To all whom itmay concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR J SMITH, a citizen of, the' United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Paper-Bag Seal, of which .the'following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to apaper bag seal or fastener, and aims to provide a strip or ribbon applied to the bag or sack in a novel manner and provided with glue, mucilage or adhesive material thereon, whereby when the bag or sack is filled and 1 the mouth portion thereof folded so as to close the bag or sack, the strip or ribbon may be passed over the top ofthe bag and se-] cured to the bag for holding the same closed in a'thoroughly practical manner, and without the employment of the usual binding cord or string.

The present invention also aims to provide a securing or binding means of the nature indicated, eliminating with the use of string,

and which will permit the bag or sack to be readily and inexpensively sealed in closed condition, whereby the package will be neat in appearance, and willnot be liable to open accidentally.

A further object-of the present invention, is to assemble the strip or ribbon with the bag or sack in a unique manner, whereby the bag or sack may be handled int'he usual manner, the stripor ribbon being exposed, and without the liability of the strip or ribbon to project loosely from the bag or sack, as would be liable to cause the strip or ribbon to be torn loose.

A still further object of the-invention is to so position the securing strip or' ribbon,

upon the bag or sack, that it will not become accidentally displaced, and in order that the same will not interfere-with the closing of the bag or sack, but may be readily loosened and then applied over the top of the package after the bag or sack has been closed.

It is also within. the scope of the invention, to provide a seal or securing device of the nature indicated, which may be readily and inexpensively applied to the bag or sack, which will not appreciably encumber the bag .or sack in the shipping or handling thereof, and which will be convenient, prac- I tical and eflicient in its use.

The present seal or fastener'embodies a strip or ribbon 6 of paper or other suitable material, having one end secured,as at 7, by-

means of glue or other adhesive material to the back 2 of the bagor sack, intermediate the ends and side edges of the said back. The free portion of vthe strip or ribbon 6 is bent back, the strip being doubled upon the transverse fold line 8 intermediate its ends,

to provide the inner portion 9 adjacent the back 2, and the outer portion 10 overlying the portion'9. The bend or fold '8 of the strip 6 terminates short of the mouth or upper .end of the bag or sack, as clearly seen in .Fig. 1, and the free end 11 of the strip is tucked between the folded satchel bottom 4 and the .back 2. Thus, the free end 11 of the strip 6 being projected or extended under the folded satchel bottom 4, will hold the outer. portion 10 of the strip snugly in place against the body of the bag or sack, and consequently, the entire strip 6 will be heldsnugly in place, and will not be liable to work loose when handled in the ordinary manner. The strip, as applied to the, bag or sack, will not encumber the same, and it will be noted that the strip may be readily and inexpensively applied tothe sack or bag either manually or mechanically.

One 'side of the strip 6 is provided with glue, mucilage, or other adhesive material,"

as at 12, the said adhesive material being disposed upon the inner side of the portion 9 of the strip and upon the outer side of the outer portion 10. The adhesive material 12 extends throughout the length of the strip.

In use, whenthe bag or sack is unfolded or opened, as seen in Fig. 2, the free end 11 of the strip or ribbon 6 will be released by the bottom 4, and the portions 9 and 10 of the strip will then swing downwardly and outwardly, as seen in Fig. 2, to enable the mouth portion of the bag or sack to be folded so as to close the bag after the same has been filled. Then, after the upper end of the bag has been folded and closed, as indicated at 13 in Fig. 3, the strip or ribbon 6 may be readily swung over the upper end of the package, after the. adhesive material 12 has been moistened, and which will enable the strip 6 to be readily secured over the upper end of the package and against the front 1.. It will be observed that the end 7 of the strip 6 being attached previously to the back 2, and the strip assuming the position illustrated in Fig. 2, when. the bag is unfolded, will enable the strip to be readily moistened and handled for applying it to the package or bundle, as seen in Fig. 3.

The strip or ribbon 6 is not excessively long, and extends from the back, over the upper end 'of the package, and thence practically down the front 1. In this manner, the minimum amount of material is only necessary, without detracting from thesecurity of the seal or fastener.

The present seal or fastener therefore eliminates the use of the ordinary tying string, which requires considerable time and trouble in applying the same. With the present device, the fastening means is carried in a convenient and handy position by the bag or sack, and may be quickly and conveniently applied to the package. Furthermore, with the present device, when the package is sealed, or bound by the strip or ribbon, the package will present a neat and attractive appearance, and will not be liable to break open accidentally.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is z- 1. The combination with a folded paper bag having a folded satchel bottom, of a strip having one end attached to the bag and having adhesive material thereon, the strip being doubled upon itself and having its free end tucked under the folded bottom of the bag.v

2. The combination with a folded paper bag having a satchel bottom folded against the back thereof, of a strip having one end attached'to the back of the bag, the strip being providedwith adhesive material, and being doubled upon itself, the free end of the strip being tucked between the said folded bottom and back of the bag, and the bend of the strip terminating short of the mouth of the bag.
