To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA HERNHUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the countyof Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to bags or containers, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind witha simple, durable and effective closure which will securely hold the bag closed when desired and which will not interfere with filling the bag when o en.

PA further object is to provide a combined closure or retaining device and handle for carrying the bag in either open or closed position.

Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.

The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings which constitute a partof this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.

In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag constructed in accordance with my invention, the same beilg Shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the bag in open position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of aslightly modified construction.

The bag A is preferably made ofV paper,

and its open upper end is adapted to be closed by an overlapping flap B made integral with and forming a continuation of the blank from which the bag is formeth Just below the flap on the inside of the bag there is secured a reinforcing or stiifening strip C through which and the portion of the bag to which is secured, spaced perforations c' are formed for the passage of an endless cord or. tape D. The strip C is preferably pasted to the inner surface of the bag in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, but it may be secured in any other suitable manner. The endless cordl D is 'also passed through perfor-ations b arranged in the flap B opposite the perforations c when the flap is folded down into closed position. `On the front of the bag, just below the lower edge of the flap so as not t0 be covered thereby 'when the latter is in closed position, a button E is secured, the same being preferably provided with a paper or fiber head or washer below which the cord D may be caughtand clamped. When the bag is closed, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the portion o'f the cord D on the front of the bag is caught under the button E so as to make the said portion of the cord on the front of the bag assume the shape of a V, said button being arranged about equidistant from the two perforations b through which the cord is passed. The portion of the cord on the rear face of the bag is then used as a handle for carryingthe container. It will be noted that the weight of the bag and its contents will tend to more firmly hold the cord in engagement with the button E, while the V- shaped portions of the cord extending from said button to the perforations b on the front of the bag will overlap the edge of the flap and effectually retain the same in closed position. When the bag is to be opened,

the portion of the cord on the front face thereof is -disengaged from the button E,

whereupon the flap may be turned upward to the position illustrated in Fig. 2. The portion of the cord vwhich was engaged with the button E when the bag was closed may then be used as a handle for supporting the bag while it is being filled.

If desired, eyelets c may be placed in the perforations in the reinforcing strip C, as illustrated in Fig. 3. These eyelets not only serve to reinforce the perforations, therebv avoiding the danger of the same being torn, but also constitute an additional means of securing the reinforcing-strip C to the bag.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States z- 1. A bag having a closure flap with perforations therein, there being registering perfoi-ations in the rear portionof the bag, a

A bag having a closure Hap with perforations therein, there being registering perforations in the rear portion of the bag, a button on the front of the bag below the ,edge of the flap so as not to be covered thereby when closed and substantially equidistant from the perforations in the -flap, and a combined handle and closing device consisting of an endless cord passed through said perforations and adapted to have the portion thereof which is arranged on the front of the bag overlap the edge of the flap and caught under said button while the portion of saideord at the rear of the bag serves as a handle, the portion of the cord inl front of 15 the bag being then arranged in the form of a V substantially as described.
