Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sep a. 1, 190a.
Application filed February 26, 1908. Serial No. 411,930.
- cannot be surreptitiously opened; second, to
provide an envelop for transmitting valuable papers and documents through the mail and third, to provide an envelop that cannot be opened without detection.
We attain the above objects by an envelop that will be presently described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of the envelop, with all the flaps thereof in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the corner flaps as folded and the envelop fasteners in position. Fig. 3 is a similar view, illustrating the side flaps in a closed position,,', flap in an open position.
with a fastener Fig. 4 is a similar view'with the fastener flap in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a plan of the envelop illustrating the same in a condition to receive a missive or paper, and, Fig. 6 is a similar view of the envelop completely closed.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the body of the envelop having side and 3, and end flaps 4 and 5', these flaps being folded upon the dotted lines illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The end flap 4 is provided with corner flaps 6, said flaps being 'umnied or provided with an adhesive material 7. Secured to the end flap 4 by said corner [laps is a piece of wire 8 bent to provide a resilient triangular shaped head 9 and prongs 10, said prongs engaging in the corner flaps, while this head 9 protrudes beyond. the end flap 4. The end flap 5 is provided with pronged reinforcements 11, these reinforcements being retained in position by folding the edges of the end iiap 5 thereon, the prongs of said reinforcements engaging the edges of the end flap. The side flap 2 is adapted to be folded inwardlyupon the body of the envelop and upon the side flap 2, is located a metallic eyelet 12.. The side flap 3 is provided with an opening 13, surroundedby adhesive material 14, this adhesive material,- when moistened, retaining the side flap 3 upon the side flap 2 and the opening 13 in so registration with the eyelet 12.
The outer side of the flap 3 is provided with a fastener flap 15, thisflap beingsealed over the opening 13, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. flap 15, which is somewhat triangular in shape, is held on the flap 3 by adhesively securing the flap 15 along one edge of the f ap 3 as seen in Fig. 3. The opposite free edge of the flap 15 as seen in Fig. 3 adhesive material 15 which, is closed against the flaps 3 and 2 as seen in Fig. 4, will engage the flaps 3 and 2 and se- Before being sealed, this fastener is provided with i when the flap 15 cure the flap 15 in the closed or sealed position. It is to be noted, however, that this its upper edge when Fig. 4 so that the 15 and inen the end flap 15 is unsealed along in the position. shown in head 9 can be inserted under fia troduced into the eyelet 12.
flap the pronged rein oreements 11 are engaged with said side flaps, while said end flap covers the fastening flap 15. After a letter or paper has been placed in the envelo the end fla 4 5 is folded upon the side flaps 2 and 3,
is folded over, and the 'resi ient trianguar 35 shapedhead 9 isinserted in the free endof flap 5, and under flap 15, through opening13, into eyelet 12, and side fla 2. In passing the head -9 through the eye et 12, the same is! compressed until said head passes through the eyelet and flap 2 into the envelop pocket when said head will expand, and the shoulders 16 thereof will retain said head in the envelop.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that we have devised positive and reliable means for retaining the flaps of an envelop in a closed position.
We desire it to be understood that the envelop can be made-of various grades of paper or paperoid, and we reserve the right to make any modifications in our invention as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is
1. An envelop comprising a body portion, side flaps adapted to fold upon said body portion, end ilaps adapted to fold upon said side flaps, an eyelet adhesively secured between said side flaps, a fastener llap carried by one of said side flaps and adaptedto lie upon said eyelet, metallic oronged reinforcements carried by one of said end fia s, a resilient metallic triangular head carrie by the other of said end flaps and held in engagement therewith by adhesively secured corner flaps,
said head being adapted to pass through said flaps and said eye scribed.
2. An envelop comprising a body portion, side fla s adapted to fold thereon, end flaps adapte' to fold on said side flaps, an eyelet arranged. between said side flaps, metallic reet, substantially as deinforcem-ents carried by one of said end flaps, a resilient triangular shaped head carried by the other of said end flaps and adapted to pass through said side flapsand said eyelet. 15
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
