WILLIAM RADGLIFF, OF IBURGETTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1913.
Application filed January 26, 1912. Serial No. 673,566.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM RAnoLirr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burgettstown, in the county of \Nashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide an envelop, which when once sealed, cannot be opened without detection or without mutilating a portion of the envelop.
To accomplish the desired result, use is made of an envelop body comprising a blank provided with side flaps, a bottom flap and a sealing flap, the said bottom flap and said side flaps being adapted to be arranged one upon the other and retained in locked relation by locking means formed on one of the side flaps and a sealing member formed with the sealing flap and adapted for engagement with the bottom flap to retain the sealing flap in lockedengagement with the bot tom flap.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my envelop,
showing parts thereof in sealed and locked position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the initial position of the side flaps, before the same are relatively locked to the bottom flap. Fig. 3 is a similar fragmentary perspective view showing one of the side flaps overlapping the bottom flap with the other side flap in position for sealing the side flaps to the bottom flap. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner of folding the sealing member on the sealing flap prior to engaging the same with the bottom flap. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which my envelop is formed. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 6-6 Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 77 in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 5 I provide a blank 10, preferably formed of a single sheet of material and arranged to form a body 11 having side flaps 12, 13, a bottom flap 14 and a sealing flap 15. The side flap 12 is provided at its outer end with a slot 16, terminating in openings 17 and the side flap 13 is provided at its outer end with a locking flange 18. The bottom flap 14 is provided with a slot 16*, terminating in openings 17 and adjacent the slot 16 a slot 19 is provided, terminating in openings 20. Integrally formed on the sealing flap 15 is a locking flange 21, the mentioned sealing flap being shaped so that the smallest width thereof will be at the point where the locking flange 21 is formed thereon.
hen it is desired to assemble various parts of my envelop the bottom flap 14 is first bent upon the body 11, along the dotted line 14 and the side flaps 12 and 13 are then bent upon the body 11, along the dotted lines 12*, 13 respectively so that the relative positions of the bottom flap and side flaps will be as shown in Fig. 2. Now by pressing the flap 12 against the body 11, the slot 16 and openings 17 thereof will register with the slot 16 and the openings 17 thereof. When this has been accomplished the ends of the locking flange 18 are coiled as shown in Fig. 3 and the locking flange is then pressed through the registering slots 16, 16*, the ends of the flange 18 being then uncoiled, thus preventing the flap 13 from becoming unlocked or disengaged from'the flaps 12, 14, it being understood that the ends of the flange 18 are simply bent together or coiled to permit of passing the,
flange through the slots 16, 16 after which the, mentioned ends are uncoiled as has been mentioned, so that the flange will be larger than the registering slots 16, 16 thus preventing the side flap 13 from becoming disengaged from the side flap 12 and the bot tom flap 14.
The article to be contained in the envelop is now placed between the inner side of'the body 11 and the inner sides of the connected flaps 12, 13 and 14, after the sealing flap is bent upon the body 11, along the dotted line 15. The ends of the locking flange 21 are now coiled so as tolie adjacent each other and as shown in Fig. 4 and the mentioned flange is then extended through the slot- 19. Vhen this has been accomplished the coiled portions of the flange 21 will uncoil so that the flange will be larger than the slot 19, thus preventing the removal of the flange through the slot and retaining the sealing flap 15 in engagement with the bottom flap 14. The slots 16, 16' and 19 terminate in openings 17 17 and 20 respectively, as has been mentioned heretofore and by providing the openings at the ends of the slots, locking flanges 18 and 2 1 can be passed through the respective slots without tearing the material or paper from which the envelop is made.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description that with envelop ol'i the;
character described, when the various parts thereoi have been moved into. sealing position', it willbe impossible to remove the contents of the. envelop! therefrom without tearmg or mutilating the envelop, thus making it; impossible to remove. the contents of the side portions of the said body upon itself and over the said bottom flap, one of the: said side flaps having a slot adapted. to reg-1 ifster with one of the slots of the bottom tlap, a locl'zing flange formed on the other side 1 and adapted to extend through the said! registering slots in the bottom flap and the iiiinst mentioned side flap, a sealing flap formed by bending an upper portion of the said body upon itself and over the said side flaps and said bottom flap, the edges of the said sealing flap being provided with: an adhesi-ve and a locking flange formed with the .said sealing flap and adapted to extend through one of the slots in the said bottom flapto secure the said sealing flange in sealed position, over and upon the said side flaps and said bottom flap, the locking flanges of the second mentioned side fiap and said sealing fiapbeing adapted to be rolled up to permit of insertingthe said locking flanges through the respective slots provided therefor the said locking flanges being adapted to un roll after being passed through their respective slots to secure the said side. flaps in locked relation with the said bottom flap and the said sealing flap in locked relation with the said bottom flap.
