Description

July 20, 1948. E. G. JOHNSON CONVERTIBLE FOLDER AND MANUSCRIPT COVER Filed April 25, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 F I G. l

ENTOR SHEET ONE OF DRAWINGS E. G. JOHNSON CONVERTIBLE FOLDER AND MANUSCRIPT COVER Filed April 25, 1946 Ql0 SHEET ONE OF TEXT drawings) Il l g.
(Refers to sheets |8|2of 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 SHEET TWO OF DRAWINGS /0 SHEET ONE OF TEXT vVENTOR 20 as shown. This attens the wing portions 32 of the head into =a common plane above and in contact with the sheet. When the front cover portion 4 is folded down against back cover portion 6, the head 20 is held flat thereby.
It will be appreciated that the thickness of the manuscript cover is more than the folder only by the thickness of the head 20 so that ling cabinet space is not substantially increased in order to maintain led papers in the orderly manner resulting from their binding together.
In order to provide for the easy handling, reading, and comprehension of manuscripts illustrated by drawings, and at the same time use identically sized and punched sheets, potential fasteners 8 are provided at the top of portion S for fastening manuscript sheets by holes:
I2 and potential fasteners 8 are provided along the hinge-line lr6 for fastening of sheets along their right edges by holes I as shown in Figures 6 and 7. j
. The relative arrangement is as shown, that is, so that the top edges of the sheets 36 lie below the hinge line of fasteners 8' and the left edges of sheets 38 lie to the right of the hinge lines offasteners 8". In Figure 1 the relationship of thegroups of sheets 36 and 38 is illustrated when not in use, for reading.V Figures 6 and '7 show their relationship when in use for reading and demonstrate that several sheets of drawing may successively be disposed opposite a particular page of text to facilitate their consideration.
Having described my invention according to theY statutes, I claim:
l. In an article of sheet material forming a letter file folder convertible to a manuscript coverhaving a front cover portion and a back cover portion and having a straight scored portion forming a cover hinge, a plurality of potential fasteners formed in said back cover portion, ,the potential fasteners being each rendered potential but not yet usable by a pair of identical straight parallel slits entirely through the sheet material forming a fastener shank portion normal -to and terminating along a hinge line adjacent the cover hinge and a plurality of arcuate slits forming a ring of displaced slits centered adjacent the ends of said straight slits remote from the cover hinge, the ends of the various arcuate slits being separated by uncut portions Vof sheet material and the ends of the arcuate slitsnearest the shank slits being separated from the latter slits by uncut portions of sheet material.
f 2. In an article according to claim l, there being a plurality of said potential fasteners disposed along the cover hinge, and a plurality of said potential fasteners disposed along the top edge of the back cover portion, the fasteners being so arranged that identical sheets of punched paper may be fastened to either the first or the second group of said fasteners and that leaves fastened to each group may be interleaved.
` 3. In an article of sheet material forming a 4 letter le folder convertible to a manuscript cover having a front cover portion and a back cover portion and having a straight scored portion forming a cover hinge, a plurality of potential fasteners formed in said back cover portion, the potential fasteners being each rendered potential but not yet usable by a pair of identical straight parallel Vslits entirely through the sheet material forming fastener shank portions normal to and terminating along a hinge line common to two or more of said fasteners and -a plurality of arcuate slits forming a ring of displaced slits centered adjacent the other ends of said straight slits, the ends of the various arcuate y slitsby uncut portions of the sheet material.
4. In an article of sheet material forming a letter file folder convertible to a manuscript cover having a front cover portion and a back cover portion and having a straight scored p0rtion forming a cover 'hinge, a plurality of potential fasteners formed in said cover; the potential fasteners each being formed, and rendered potenti-al but not yet usable, by slits entirely through the' sheet material forming fastener shank portions normal'to and terminating along a hinge line common'to two or more of said fasteners and a plurality of slits forming an enlarged head Vof greater cross dimension than the shank centered adjacent the other ends of lsaid shank slits, the ends of the various head forming slits being separated by uncut portionsrof sheet material and the ends of the head forming slits nearest the shank slits being separated from the shank slits by uncut portionsof the sheet material.
45. In an article of sheet material formingl a letter l'e folder convertible to a manuscript cover having a front cover portion and a back cover portion and having a straight scored portion forming va cover hinge, a plurality of fasteners formed in said cover, the fasteners being formed by pairs of straight slits lentirely through the sheet material forming fastener shank portions normal to and terminating along a hinge line common to two or more of said fasteners and additional slits v'forming heads for said Shanks 0f greater size than said Shanks centered adjacent the other ends of said straight slits, the slits being interrupted by portions of uncut material easily broken away.
