GEORGE P. ADAMS AND JAMES MILLER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA; SAID MILLER ASSIGNONIO SAID ADAMS.
PAPER B0X.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,358, dated February 8, 1881. Application led June 9, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE P. ADAMS and JAMES 4MILLER, both of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide from a blank formed of one piece of paper a rectangular box, the ends of which are secured by quadruple folds or flaps in such a manner as to be secured from accidental opening or by pressure of the contents of the box.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the aps of our box; Fig. 2, a plan showing two aps turned in or closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the box, showing one end.
The ends of the box A are closed by four iaps, a a and b b', those represented by a c having notches a, as shown, while those indicated by b b are rounded and have their ends formed into tongues b. A slot, c, is made in each of the aps b b', and when these aps are in position or folded thev tongue at the end of the ap b enters the slot of the Hap b', while the tongue of the ap b enters the slot of the 'ap I), and thus both ends of the box are securely held from being opened from inward pressure, the notched aps a a serving to receive a part of the inward pressure and prevent the cont-ents of the boxfrom rest, ing or pressing directly upon the outside flaps, b b. The flaps a a being notched on each side, as shown, when they are folded to cover the end of the box a space is left on each side opposite the slots c c, so that when the outer aps, b b', are folded down over the inner fiaps they are more easily adjusted, and the various aps will not bind. against each other.l
The body of the box is made with four sides in the usual way, and joined at one of the corners by one side of the blank interlapping upon the inner face of the opposite side, the parts being held together by glue or paste.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ispaper box provided with the flaps a a',
having notches a, and with aps b bf, having,
tongues b and` slots c, said aps l) b being `adapted to fold over the flaps a a and tuck each into the other to close the ends of the box, as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 22d day of May, 1880.
