UNITED STATES P TE T OFFICE.
ALONZO P. NASH, OF WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
e FOLDING PACKING-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,679, dated March 7, 1882.
Application filed January 23, 1882. (Model) I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO P. NASH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Packing- Boxes; and I do hereby'declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in folding packingboxes. The box is so constructed that when not in use it can be folded perfectly flat to occupy only a very small place, and when desired for use it presents a very strong box, not liable to get out of shape by side or diagonal pressure.
The box is so constructed as to occasion no waste of material in its make up, and, if so desired, it is provided with a ready made and creased wrapper pasted or otherwise secured to its ends or other part of the box, so that when required for use it mayinstantaneously be converted into a properly and neatly wrapped up package.
The invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of the box with its wrapper as folded together flat for transportation or when not in use. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section when put in position for use, showing one end closed and the other end open. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the box when in use, and showing the creased wrapper folded around it, as described. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the pasteboard portion of the box as laid out flat, and showing its hinged covers secured thereto, as will hereinafter be more fully described.
Similarletters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the drawings.
a (t a a are the sides of the box, which are made of one singlerectan gular orsquare piece of pasteboard, A, as shown in Fig. 4, which is bent or creased on the lines a a a a, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4,) and after being so creased the projecting piece a is pasted or otherwise attached to the opposite edge, a,
hinged, as may be desired. Each 'cover B is provided with a lip, B, which serves as a stop against the open end of the box when said cover is closedup against such open end, as shown in the left-hand side of Fig. 2. Each cover is also provided on its inside with a projection, B, adapted toproject inside of the open end of the box, when the cover is closed against it, as shown in the left-hand side of Fig. 2, which projection serves as a stay against the inside of the sides a a a a to strengthen the box when in use and to prevent its being crushed or bent out of shape when subjected to side or diagonal pressure from the outside. Two objects are thus attained by the construe tion of the covers B B as described, namely: They cannot be pushed into the body of the box, and when in place against the ends of the box the inwardly-projecting part B serves to retain the proper shape of the box, and to prevent its being put out of shape by outward pressure.
To provide a neat and tasty package I surround the box with a wrapper, O, pasted to any desirable part of the sides or ends of the folding box, as may he desired, which wrapper is provided with ends 0 O, properly creased, as shown by lines o c in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so that said ends of the wrapper may quickly be folded over the closed ends of the box, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, isl The herein-described folding packing-box, consisting essentially of the creased sidesaaaa and hinged ends B B, having lips B B and in wardly-proj ectin g parts B B, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALONZO P. NASH.
