Description

J. B. MOSES,
BAGGAGE FASTENBR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.16, 1909.
4 7 m Patented Dec. 7, 1909.
UNITED STATES FATE JACOB BERNHARD MOSES, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
' BAGGAGE-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. Moses, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Baggage-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of the invention are, to provide a receptacle having assembled therewith a flexible element in a single length, adapted to be severed intermediate its ends, and subsequently to be united to form two circumscribing bands for the receptacle, the manner of assembling the flexible element with the receptacle being such that the flexible element may be severed conveniently, the flexible element being so connected with the receptacle that it is not likely to become detached therefrom either before or after it is cut in two; other and further objects being made manifest hereinafter as the description of the invention progresses.
The drawing shows but one embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that changes properly formed within the scope of what is claimed may be made, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the receptacle provided with the device of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the box forming member wherewith my device is assembled, the box forming member being unfolded; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the element shown in Fig. 2, the flexible element having been severed to form two parts, the ends of which have been united.
In the accoi'npanying drawings there is shown a receptacle 1, fashioned from telescoping, box-forming members 2 and 3, the member 2 being the body of the receptacle and the member 3 the lid or closure therefor. The receptacle 1 may be variously constructed; in the present instance it is shown in collapsible form and fashioned from blanks, the construction of which is shown specifically applied to the lid 3. The lid 3 comprises a body portion 5 provided with outstanding sides 4 and ends 5, the latter being provided with tongues 6 to engage slits 7 in the sides 1, when the lid is folded into the form shown in Fig. 1. A flexible Specification of Letters Patent.

element 8, a cord or the like, is provided, the intermediate portion of which is extended longitudinally of the lid 3 adjacent one side thereof, the ends 14 of the flexible element being passed through adjacent openings 1O located-near the corners of the lid, and passed, transversely of the lid and along its lower face, to extend upon the upper face of the lid through remote openings 11 located adjacent the other corners of the lid. The length of the flexible element 8 is slightly greater than twice the transverse circumference of the receptacle 1 so that when the intermediate portion 9 of the flexible element is severed between the openings 10, two separate bands will be formed, the ends of which are adapted to be tied together to inclose the receptacle 1 adjacent its ends, as shown in Fig. 1.
In practical operation the blanks may be shipped in the form shown in Fig. 2, the flexible element 8 being unsevered. If desired, the flexible element may be severed and the ends united as shown in Fig. 3, the receptacle still being in knock-down form. When the box forming members are shipped in the condition shown in Fig. 2, the same are bent and interlocked at their corners to as sume the form shown in Fig. 1, the intermediate portion 9 of the flexible element being subsequently severed and the ends of the two circumscribing bands united. Vhen the box is shipped in the form shown in Fig. 3, the box forming members may be bent into shape and interlocked at their corners, the circumscribing bands being untied and subsequently united to inclose the box.
The foregoing device is in itself suflicient to effect a satisfactory and secure closure of the receptacle, but should greater security be required, the construction of the device is such that it will in nowise interfere with additional fastening means, which latter means may be of any desired form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device of the class described comprising a rectangular lid having openings near its corners; a flexible element having its intermediate portion disposed upon the upper surface of the lid, adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of the lid, the free ends of the flexible element being passed through certain of the openings, adjacent said longitudinal edge, and extended transversely of the lid along the lower surface of the lid, through others of the openings, adjacent the other longitudinal edge, the length of the flexible element being greater than twice the transverse circumference of the lid, the fiexibands arranged to-be united transversely of 10 the lid.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
