EASEL-CARTON.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 31, 1917. Serial No. 189,087.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEROME LEWINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Easel-Cartons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to display cartons having an easel attachment which folds flat for packing and automatically opens to support, the carton when unpacked and it is my object to construct an easel attachment which will be cheap, positive and easily attached to any carton and to'pro duce a knock-down. carton which will be peculiarly adapted for use with my easel.

The drawing shows my easel attached to my carton in which I have embodied a maximum of strength with a minimum of waste.

Figure 1 is a view of the open carton and easel; Fig. 2 a view of the flat blank for the carton proper; Fig. 3 a sectional view of the carton with the easel folded for shipping, the open position being indicated by dotted lines; and Fig. 4 a sectional view showing the easel and hinge.

The carton blank comprises a bottom 1, sides 2 and 3, ends 4 and 5 and cover 6 provided in the form shown with wings 7 and 8 which may be utilized as display space for advertising matter. The sides 2 and 3 have the locking tabs 9 and 10, 9 and 10, the tabs 10 and 10' being provided with cuts 11 and 11' and the tabs 9 and 9 with double cuts 12 and 13 and 12 and 13'.

The bottom 1 has the small car 14' out near one end 4 and said end 4 has projecting from it the extensions 14 and 15 with the slot 16 at the fold.

The end 5 has the keystone slot 17 cut therein and the cover 6 has the small locking car 18 extending therefrom.

In folding the carton the sides 2 and 3 are bent up and the tabs 1010 interlocked by the slots 1111'. The end 4 is turned up and the extension 14 bent over the interlocked tabs with the part 15 caught under the ear 14.

The other end 5 is then bent up and the tabs 99 folded around the outside, the slots 1213 and 12'13 registering with the keystone slot 17. The cover 6 can then be bent down and the car 18 inserted in the slot 16 with the extensions 7 and 8 folded down on the outside.

The easel 19 is fastened to the bottom of the carton by the flexible strip hinge 20 lines but on releasing the easel the rubber band pulls the end into contact with the end of the carton, the effective length of the strip hinge 20 being such that the easel assumes a substantially right angled position with respect to the bottom of the carton in which position it is retained by the tension of the rubber band.

My carton and easel can be shipped flat or knocked-down and is quickly and easily folded together making a strong container provided with an automatically opened easel whose operating rubber band also serves to lock one end of the carton together. By reason of the sizes, shapes and arrangement of the various parts I am enabled to produce my carton and easel with a minimum of waste of the sheet material used.

I claim 1. An easel carton comprising a body, a flexible strip hinge one end of which is attached to the bottom of the body at a point intermediate its ends, an easel piece attached to the other end of the hinge at a point intermediate its ends and an elastic band secured at one end to the easel and at the other to the end of the carton body, the length of the hinge being such that the easel assumes a position substantially at' right angles to the body bottom when in raised position and lies wholly within the boundaries of said bottom when in closed position.

An easel carton comprising a body, a slotted easel piece, a strip hinge one end of which is attached to the body bottom at a point intermediate its ends and the other end of which passes through the easel slot and is secured thereto, an elastic band secured at one end to the easel and at the other to the body end, the length of the hinge being such that the easel assumes a osition at substa l y r ght a gles to the Patented June 18, 1918.

3. An easel carton comprising a body having a top bottom, sides and ends, one of said ends being provided with a keystone slot, tabs on the sides adjacent to the slotted end, double slots in each of said tabs adapted to register With the keystone slot, an easel piece, a strip hinge one end of Which is fastened to the body bottom at a point intermediate of its ends and the other end fastened to the easel piece and an elastic band extending from the easel piece to the slots in the tabs and end, the effective length of the hinge being such that the easel assumes a position at substantially right angles to the bottom when open and lies entirely Within the boundaries of said bottom when closed.
