. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES VALENTA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, ,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mailing envelops and has for its object the production of an envelop which may be readily and easily opened or severed.

A further object is the production of an envelop which will be of simple construction and efiicient in use.

Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an envelop formed of paper or like material consisting of a rectangular central portion 1 which, when the envelop is completed, forms the front side thereof, and flaps 2, 3, 4; and 5 which are adapted to be overlapped and secured together as is readily understood to form the back of theenvelop. The flap 3 is left unfastened until after the mailing matter has been inserted into the envelop, whereupon said flap. may be fastened in the usual mannerto close the envelop.

Arranged along one edge of the envelop under the fiap 2 is a cord 6. One end of said cord is secured, as by tying, to an ear 7 formed upon the flap 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Said ear 7 is provided at its outer edge with a notch 8 in order to prevent disengagement of the cord 6 therefrom. The cord 6 is coextensive with the adjacent edge of the envelop and the opposite end thereof 'is formed into a loop 9 the bight of which projects exteriorly as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The extremity 10 of the looped end of said cord is releasably fastened as by gluing or pastingunder an ear 11 which is formed upon the flap 4. Through the provision of the ear 11 the fastening of the extremity 10 in proper position is greatly facilitated and is securely held to prevent accidental disengagement or withdrawal thereof.

With the arrangement disclosed it will be seen when it is desired to open or sever the envelop it is only necessary to engage the exteriorly projecting bight portion of loop 9 between the thumb and finger and pull the same outwardly so as to cause said cord to sever the adjacent edge of the envelop as clearly shown in Fig. 3. With this arrangement it will be seen that an envelop may be readily and easily opened and without fear of injury to the contents of the envelop such as is frequently the case where the envelop is opened by severing one edge thereof with a sharptool or scissors. A loop 9 is formed ting the end of said cord to project exteriorly, in order to afford a better grip for engagement by the fingers, it being clear that without the provision of said loop the fingers would be liable to slip from engagement with the cord in the severing op eration.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination of an envelop; asevering cord arranged insaid envelop along one edge thereof, said cord being coextensive with said edge; and an car on said envelop at one end of said edge embraced by one end of said cord for anchoring the same to the envelop, said car being notched at its outer edge for the reception of said cord, the op posite end of said cord projecting exteriorly, substantially as described.

2.
