closing papers, magazines and books while sending them through the mail and is directed to the provision of a wrapper so constructed as to facilitate the operation of removing the wrapper to release the inclosure thereof.

Wrappers for papers and the like have heretofore been made with provision for tearing out a strip of the paper thereof in removing the wrapper, as by securing a wire or cord to the under side of the wrapper. In all of these, so far as I am aware, the

presence of the tearing means has not been suiiiciently evident so that frequently as much time and effort are expended 'in removing a wrapper as though it were unprovided with a tearing means when, as a matter of fact, it is provided with such means. In accordance with my invention, a wrapper is provided having provision for a tearing strip and so constructed that the presence of the strip is apparent at a glance. The tearing strip is formed by providing in the wrapper two parallel lines of cuts which will define lines of tearing, these cuts being preferably parallel and disposed at an angle to the length of the lines. The lines of cuts do not, however, extend all the way out to both edges of the wrapper; instead, an opening of substantial size is provided in the wrapper adjacent to one edge thereof and the lines of cuts extend to the edge of this opening. A tab is provided extending into this opening, '80 that by grasping this tab and drawing it away from the inclosure, the tearing strip may be removed and the inclosure released. The presence of the tearing means thus provided is noticed immediately, particularly as the paper underlying the opening in the wrapper is, in practically all cases, diiferent in appearance from that of the wrapper. The opening in the wrapper is preferably of greater size than a postage stamp, so that the stamp may be aiiixed to the inclosure within this opening, in which position it aid in attracting attention to the tearing means.

l have illustrated an embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view of the wrapper and Fig. 2 shows the wrapper applied to an in closure.

Referring to these drawings, the wrapper In this sheet are two parallel lines of cuts B, the cuts in each line being parallel and disposed at an angle to the length of the lines and the cuts of the two lines diverging in a direction away from an opening (3 provided in the wrapper adjacent to one edge thereof. opening is of substantial size and is of such shape as to provide a tab D at the end of the lines of cuts B, its ends being in alinement with the lines of cuts. The size of the opening (3 is preferably such as to provide space for a postage stamp E between the tab D and the opposite side of the opening. The opening C is adjacent to one edge of the wrapper and the lines of cuts preferably extend to a point near the opposite edge, so that at each edge of the wrapper there is a strip of paper which is uncut and which prevents accidental tearing of the wrapper.

The wrapper is applied to the paper or other inclosure in the usual manner with the lines of cuts extending across the face of the inclosure near the upper edge thereof as shown in Fig. 2. The stamp is pref erably afixed to the inclosure as shown within the opening in the wrapper. When the paper is received, the appearance of the tab outlined a ainst the underl a er of difi'erent col r and the stamp fi s p ning in the wrapper, immediately attracts attention to the tearing means. The wrapper may then be quickly removed by grasping the tab and drawing it away fi'omthe paper, the lines of cuts defining ing so that a narrow strip is removed from the wrapper extending almost all the way the lines of tea across the same. in most cases, thenncut portion at the end of the lines of cuts will be torn in removing the strip; if not, it may be quickly severed, as may also the uncut portion at the opposite edge of the wrapper.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows 1. A wrapper having an opening therein adjacent to one edge of a size to receive a postage stamp, two parallel lines of cuts extending across the wrapper from said opening to define a tearing strip and a tab at the end of said lines of cuts, substantially as described.
