ENVELOP.
APPLIOATYION FILED 1333.4, 1911.

' erm ne onnnnns n; SNIDER, or oonwar, scorn CAROLINA.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CHARLES HUDsoN' SNIDER, a citizen of the United States, andresident'of Conway, Horry county, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of
-,which. the following isa specification.
This invention relates to improvements in envelops, and its objects are first to provide a safety device whereby it will be practicalla impossible to detach-the closure flap Wit out mutilating the same.
Another object is the provision of a rupturing tongue formed with the closure flap tion, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure '1 is an elevation of 'an envelop constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same closed and sealed; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the sealing flap raised; Fig. .3 is a detail showing the free end portion of the rupturing tongue partly raised; and Fig; 4 is a detail showing the rupturing tongue wholly raised and the weakened edge partly broken.
The envelop comprises the front or body ortion 5, the end flaps 6 and 7, the bottom ap 8, and sealing flap 9. The end flaps 6 and 7 are formed in the usual manner and arranged over the inner face of the front or body 5. The bottom flap 8 is bent over the inner face of the front or body 5 and as usual has marginal portions bearing on marginal portions of the end flaps 6 and 7, such bearing portions being suitably gummed and sealed. Instead of gumming the entire free edge portion of the sealing flap 9, as is usual in most envelops, I apply gum on portions of the closure flap located on either side of the medial portion of the free side thereof. With this construction,'the medial portion of the free side of I Specification of Letters Eatent.

ing flap is sealed as shown in Fi .1, but
may be readily raised by taking ho d of the same with the finger and thumb.
In order to facilitate the opening of the envelop, I form the sealing flap with ampthe sealing flap will be free when the seal- 7 turing tongue 10. This rupturing tongue includes that portion of the sealing flap located between the weakened lines 15 and 16, the said weakened linesl5 and 16 extend from the free edge of the flan to the inner or connected side thereof. The weakened lines 15 and 16 terminate in weakened lines or scoring 17 and 18, these last named weakened lines or scoring 17 and 18 being located n the side edge of the envelopv and extend- 1n this construction, the envelop, when sealed,
may be readily opened by taking hold of the free end of the rupturing tongue and drawing the same toward the connected end thereof until the rupturing tongue is wholly raised as shown in Fig. 4, after which the finger may be inserted into the disclosed opening and moved through either of the weakened portions 17 or 18. By providing the weakened lines 15 and 16, comparatively no effort will be required to disengage the rupturing tongue and by eliminating gum from the free end portion of the tongue, the said free end portion may be readily engaged between the finger and thumb.
By referring to the drawings, it .will be seen that the gummed portions 13 and 14: of the closure flap are perforated as shown at 19. This arrangement of perforations need not be identical to that shown, since it is obvious as will presently appear, that the required effect may be obtained by forming slits in the gummed portions. By the provision of the perforations, it will be practically impossible to'disengage the-gummed portions of the sealing flap without mutilating the same, and in so doing, it will indicate that the envelop has been tampered with.
outwardly to the ends thereof. .With
Having thus described the invention, what i is claimed is:
An envelop having a closing flap hinged to its body portion along one edge thereof,
and the hinged edge having perforated side forations in the hinged edge, as and for the portions and an unperforated intermediate purpose described. 10 portion, and said flap being provided with In testimony whereof I afiixmy signaa middle ungummed portion and laterally ture in presence of two witnesses.
arranged gummed portions along its free CHARLES H. SNIDER. edge, and lines of perforations arranged on Witnesses: 0p osite sides of said ungummed ortion ARTHUR L.'BRYANT,
