PATENT OFFICE.
PACKET-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 762,504, dated June 14, 1904.
Application filed \pril 18, 1903.
To til whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AoHILLE TRAMEZZANI, of the city of London, England, have invented an Improvement in Packet-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a closure or seal for envelops or parcel-wrappers which will render more diflicultthe opening and rescaling of the envelop or wrapper without detection.
More particularly, my invention relates to that form of packet or envelop closures in which the top flap is formed with an adhesive tongue which is passed through a slot in the back of the envelop and adheres to the inner side of the back. While such closures are more or less effective in preventing the surreptitious opening and rescaling of the envelop, they have been found objectionable because the slot in the back of the envelop forms a point of Weakness and is liable to be torn open accidentally, either while the tongue is being inserted or during transmission.
It is the object of my invention to remedy this defect and at the same time to produce a stronger closure more difficult to tamper with without detection. This result I accomplish by means of an auxiliary tongue on the top flap, which when the first tongue is passed through the slot and is secured to the inside of the back projects forward on the outside and is secured to the back adjacent to the slot. Not only does this auxiliary tongue effect a closure which is more difficult to unseal, but it effectively seals the slot and prevents it from being torn open.
In the preferred manner of using my closure the two tongues when secured in place extend in opposite directions, one tongue being secured to the inside of the envelop-back on one side of the slot and the other tongue being secured to the outside of the envelop on the other side of the slot; Thus the auxiliary flap not only seals the slot, but it also overcomes the strain that might be exerted on the Serial No. 153,211. (No model.)
slot by the inturned tongue, and the presence of the slot does not appreciably weaken the envelop.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the envelop-blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the envelop unsealed. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the sealed envelop.
The envelop may be formed from the usual blank having the two side flaps a a, bottom flap Z), and top flap c. The flaps a a and bare formed with slits (Z, which when the flaps a a and b are folded and united by the adhesive in the usual manner register with one another and form a slot or aperture, as shown in Fig. 2. The top flap c is provided with a tongue 0, having its under face coated with adhesive material and adapted to be folded over and passed through the slot (Z inside of the envelop.
f is a second tongue on the end of the flap 0, formed in the tongue 6 and adapted when the tongue 0 is bent and passed through the slot (Z to be secured to the outside of the back of the envelop, as shown in Fig. 3. The edges of the flap c and the tongues c and f are coated with the usual adhesive material, and when the envelop is to be sealed the adhesive is moistened, the tongue 6 is passed through the slot (Z with its adhesive-coated face in contact with the inside of the back of the envelop, and the auxiliary flap f adheres to the outer face of the back at the slot.
If desired, both of the tongues c and f may be secured on the same side of the slot; but that arrangement, while producing a stronger closure than when the auxiliary tongue is omitted, does not possess the great advantage of sealing the slot from both sides. The outer tonguef also has an ornamental effect and may be provided with a crest, monogram, or other device for ornamental or advertising purposes.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
In a packet-closure, the enveloping body having a slot in the back and provided With a top flap adapted to be folded upon the back of the body for-med With a tongue extending from the body of the flap and adapted to be .bent back and passed through the slot and sealed to the inner side of the back, and with an auxiliary tongue in the inner end of the first tongue and projecting in the same direction as said first tongue adapted to be sealed ACI-IILLE TRAMEZZANI.
