Description

J. W. BOON DISC JACKET Dec. 22, 1964 Filed Oct. 23, 1962 INVENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,162,355 DISC JACKET Johannes Wilhelmus Boon, Weverslaan, Voorburg, Netherlands Filed Oct. 23, 1962, Set. No. 232,348 Claims priority, application Netherlands Nov. 1, 1961 3 Claims. (Cl. 229-68) This invention relates to a cover for discor plate-like objects, in particular for gramophone records, said cover consisting of a bag or covering and aims at providing a cover or this kind with the aid of which it is possible to put away the gramophone records Or other disc-like objects in a simple manner in a frame, a tray or suchlike space, said records remaining in the cover so that consequently they are protected against damage, whereas nevertheless the required record or object may be easily found again and, after having been used, may be put away into its original place; said cover may serve as the original package of the gramophone record or other disc-like objects.
This is achieved by the cover according to the invention in that on either side of one of the sides of the cover and inside the circumference of said cover there are located portions adapted to be folded into supporting lips which project beyond the circumference of the cover. The cover according to the invention may be manufactured with or without a closing flap. In case a closing flap is applied, said flap may be closed after the record or disc has been introduced into the cover. In that case the portions adapted to be folded into lips are preferably provided at the side of the cover facing said closing flap.
The portions adapted to be folded into lips may be made in such manner that it is possible to form therefrom double supporting lips or supporting lips consisting of more than two sheets of material.
The portions adapted to be folded into supporting lips may be connected with one or more of their rims to the cover in mi easily separable manner. This may be accomplished for example by providing the rims in question with a perforation or incision. The portions in question may extend along part of or along the entire length of the side of the cover open during use. If they extend along a large portion of the open side or along this entire side, then double or multi-layer lips may be easily folded from these portions.
It is also possible to manufacture the cover in such manner that each of the supporting lips is formed at least by a portion of the folding gluing strip of the cover.
If desired the supporting lips and the cover may comprise portions provided with an adhesive. When the cover is put into use, the self-gluing portions are glued together so that firm supporting lips are obtained. Naturally care should be taken that these self-gluing portions do not come into contact with each other when the supporting lips have not yet been formed. Y
The portions adapted to be folded into supporting lips may be situated both in the cover and at the outside thereof.
A preferred embodiment of the cover according to the invention is characterized in that between the portions adapted to be folded into supporting lips a portion is situated which is adapted to be folded into, a lip projecting beyond the cover. This lip projects upwards when the supporting lips are carried by a support. Consequently said lip may serve as a grip and if desired it may also serve as a registration tab. Moreover, said lip presents at its fold, which is not perforated, a non-weakened rim portion of the package if said package is still in closed condition, said rim portion being adapted to support a gramophone record in the package.
This invention will be further explained below with reference to the accompanying drawings showing by way of example some embodiments of the cover according to the invention.
FIG. 1 shows a front view of a cover open at the top.
FIG. 2 shows a front view of another embodiment of a cover open at the top, of which cover part of the front has been broken away.
FIG. 3 shows a cover with a closing flap.
The cover shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 consists of a bag or cover 1 open at one side, viz. the top, of firm material, for example of firm paper or synthetic material. In the embodiment according to FIG. 1 both side rims of the back of the cover are provided with strips 2, 3 which have been folded and glued to the front of the cover. Above each of these strips 2, 3 there is a lip 4, 5 which has not been glued to the cover so that said lips, as shown for the lip 5, may be folded outwards and consequently may serve as supporting lips for the cover. Said supporting lips may be supported by a rod, rail, side wall of a cabinet etc. In order to obtain a satisfactory guiding these lips may be provided with a recess 6, 7.
In the case of the cover according to FIG. 2 the front as well as the back are provided on both sides with folded strips 8, 9 which strips are glued together. These strips are located inside the cover. Above each of these strips there is provided a lip 10, 11 which lips, as shown in the right hand side of FIG. 2, are adapted to be folded outwards and to serve as supporting lips for the cover. The lower side of these supporting lips is undercut.
The cover according to FIG. 3 likewise consists of a bag or cover 1. This bag or cover is provided at its bottom side with a folding flap 12 which, after a disc or record has been inserted into the cover, is glued to this cover.
The cover is provided in its upper portion with perforation lines 13-17, and furthermore there is provided a perforation or cutting line 18. If the cover is to be opened, the portion limited by the lines 14, 15 and 18 is separated and, as shown in dotted lines, is folded until an upright lip 19 is formed. This lip 19 may serve as a registration lip and, moreover, it facilitates the removal of a cover.
The portions of the cover limited by the perforation lines 13, 14, 16 and 15, 16, 17 may be separated and folded along the folding edges 20, 21. After the folding along the lines 22 and 23 the supporting lips for this cover are formed.
As shown in the right hand portion of FIG. 3 the portions 24 and 25 of the cover are provided with a selfglueing adhesive. When the supporting lip in question is formed these portions are pressed against each other so that they are glued together and a firm supporting lip is formed which remains well in place.
It is obvious that the invention is not restricted to the embodiments described above by way of example and shown in the drawings but that these may be modified in many ways without departing from the scope of the invvention. For example in the embodiment according to FIG. 2 the surfaces of lips 10 and 11 facing each other may also be provided with an adhesive; in the embodirnent according to FIG. 1 the supporting lips may also be doubled; at the upper side of the open covers according to FIGS. 1 and 2 a folding flap may be provided which may serve in its entirety or partly as a registration tab etc. 1
The supporting lips may, furthermore, be provided with holes 26. With the aid of these holes the covers may be suspended on hangers made from wire or suchlike material.
I claim:

separably hinged along their upper edges and havingsubstantially the same dimensions, a closure flap adapted. to
overlie and seal the lower edge, each of the side edges of two unequal portions, said front and back panels being.
sealed together by means of the longest of said portions,
the shortestof said portions forming foldable tab mernbers lying near the upper side inside of said cover when it is closed, said tab members being capable of being folded into supporting tabs projecting outwardly frorn the periphery of each of said side edges after havingopened said cover, said supporting tabs being adapted for vertical suspension of said envelope. v
2. A jacket in accordancewith claim l'wherein the tab members are provided with anapenture adapted to receive a wire support.
3. Ajacket for phonograph fdiscs comprising'an en e-. lope formed of a front and back panel, separably hinged along their upperedges, a closure, flap adapted to overlie and seal the lower edge, each of the side edges'of at least one of said panels being provided with an inwardly bent folding strip, said folding strips being divided into two unequal portions, said front and back panels being sealed together by means of the longest of said portions, the
"shortest of said portions.
forming' a't least foldable tab members lying inside ofsaid cover when it is closed, said tab member's bein'g e'apable oflbeing folded into supporting tabs projecting outwards of said cover after said cover"- has beenopened, the front panel being scored and weakened adjacent its upper edge to define a flap adapted to be separated from said front panel and folded along said edge outwardly of said envelope to give access thereto and permit'removal of the contents through said separably hinged edge, e
