UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY TRENOHARD, JR, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK. I
PAPE'R-FASTEN ER.
QATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,104, dated May 1902- Application filed March 3, 1902. Serial No. 96,404- (Nomodeh) T at whom zit-.may concern:
Beitknown that I, HENRY TRENOHARD,Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper- Fastener,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in fasteners for the flaps of envelops for containing small purchases, second-class mail-matter, or the like; and the object is to provide a fastener of simple construction that may be manufactured at a small cost and that may be readily'applied to an envelop.
I will describe a paper-fastener embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the'accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a back view of an envelop, showing a fastener embodying my invention as applied thereto and showing the envelop-flap open. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a back view showing the envelop-flap as fastened down. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastener.
The fastener consists of an eyelet 5, from opposite sides of which the fastening-fingers 6 extend. The eyelet and fingers are formed of one piece of metal, preferably of soft brass, so that the fingers may be readily bent inward or outward without breaking. In useowith an envelop the eyelet 5 is to be passed through the back thereof, as clearly indicated inthe drawings, and the inner end upset, and therefore arranged between this upset inner end and the envelop is a washer 7. The fingers 6 are designed to pass through openings in the flap 8 of the envelop. The openings 9 may be previously formed in the envelop-flap or they may be formed by forcing the fingers through the material. When the fingers are passed through the flap, they are to be turned outward, as indicated in Fig. 3, and as the openings 9 are spaced considerably apart the material 10 of the envelop-flap will form a cover to close the opening of the eyelet 5, thus preventing the entrance of dirt or dust.
By employing two fingers 6 instead of one the flap is more securely held and is prevented from'a sliding movement on the body ofthe envelop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An envelop-fastener, comprising an eyelet adapted to be engaged through the back of an envelop, and fingers extended from opposite sides of the eyelet and adapted to be passed through the flap of the envelop and turned outward and down thereon, the material between the openings in the flap forming a cover or closure for the eyelet, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY TRENOHARD, JR.
