CONTAINER- OF THE ENVELOPE .VARIETY.
Application filed September 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX STARK, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers of the Envelope Variety, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper containers and particularly to such containers of the envelope variety and resides in providing a novel and efficient structural combination of said parts with closure means therefor. It further resides in the construction of paper containers having metallic fastening means between the cover and body thereof, so as to insure durable and lasting construction and at the same time obtain an efiicient, sightly and inexpensive article.
The invention further resides in providing a container of the envelope variety suitable for holding papers, collectors papers, photographs, and also provides a sanitary container for linen articles such as napkins and the like and particularly containers requiring repeated opening and closing of the fastening means.
The invention further resides in novel construction insuring durable and lasting qualities to such articles when made of such frail body material as paper when undergoing repeated use.
Further modification also permits its use as an ordinary mailing article capable of use as an ordinary envelope without the necessary adhesives, providing'sufiicient fastening means therefor, allowing sealing against tampering and atthe same time providinga.
construction permitting its repeated use.
Further novelty of the invention will be apparent by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the specification.
and the invention particularly set forth by the appended claims.
In the drawing Fig. 1. is a rear elevation of the container. Fig. 2. is a view taken on,
the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3; is the same as Fig. 2. showmg a partial operation inopen- Fig. 5. is an enlargement device in open position. p
Referring more particularly ,to the views in which A is the'envelope proper formed by cutting the same from a one piece template with frontface 1 bent at the lower edge 2 up of the fastening Specification of Letters Patent.

wards, to form rear face 3 and folded at the top edge 4 and extending downwards to overlap the face 3 to form the closure flap 5. p,
The separate members of the snap fastener 6 pass through the rear face 3 and flap 5 respectively coordinating to form the proper fastening.
Referring to Fig. 5, particularly, the male orspring-ball head member 8 passes through rear face 3 and is upset at the inner portion 9 over the reinforcing and protecting and resilient paper washer 10 and is made secure on the outer face by upsetting the portion 11 over the metallic washer 12. The female member or socket 13 is secured to the flap 5 and has the enlarged button 14 abutting on the flap 5, the neck 15 passes through the reinforcing strip 16, and extends beyond edge 17 of flap 5 to form a manipulating handle 18. The mouth 19 is upset over the washer 2O securing the socket member firmly upon the flap.
In use with an article of the nature described, the snap fastener provides effective securing means and at the same time permits speedy access and repeated use. As a paper container the particular arrangement of parts and construction insures extended life and durability with a body material so frail as paper. Frequent manipulation in closing and opening of the container or evelope will ordinarily result in considerable tension upon the material 5, due to the resistance tov separation of the socket member 13 from the spring ball head 8. But for the construction shown very few applications offorce upon the flap 17 itself where the body material-is made of frail material will soon bending when tension is applied to the flap 18 (see Fig.
Extendin ;t 1e handle strip beyond the edge 17 of the ap 5 insuresthe application of force at the proper point and also offers increased frictlon when the thumb is forced face is made up by extending the turned flaps 3 at the sides of the container and form ng them into triangular portions extending beyond the center and forming lapped portions 3-3". I Only ordinary adhesive or no ad- I hesive at all need be use. The male 7 or spring ball member 8 of-the snap fastener passes throughall three triangular flaps forming the inner face of the-container where the three corners. overlap, and serving to securely rivet the parts together. The female portionor socket member is located in the v handle portion as above described.
With this construction the article can be fourth triangular turned down leaf forming the flap, at such a point as to properly'cd' ordinate with the male portion of the fastener in the body, .the'fiap being similarly constructed with the extended strip and used for a container where sealing is desirable, or when the snap fastener has been I closed, sealing wax S is. poured over the ex.-
7 means are employed.
tending member 18 and onto the-body 3. be
After hardening the single seal serves to effectually prevent tampering as'ther'e are no glued edges to be steamed open, the body being secured by the single rivet and the flap closed by the clasp and seal. Tampering of the contents can not be effected without destruction of the envelope or breaking of the single seal. After having served this purpose, the breaking of the seal leaves anarticle tobeused again or for uses for which the first mentioned to be used.
The article'can be made from a variety of sheeted material such as leatherfcloth, or paper. I prefer however to'make the same container was intended of paper of varied types, so called vulcanized fibre, manila, or that resembling and having a linen or textile finish impressed or embossed thereon. a
Although I havedescribed only a single fastener for the container I may use as many fasteners asthe size and shape of the envelope container requires to supply the necessary closing means and although I have claimed a single fastener, the novel con.- struction embodying-the fastener equally applies wherever a plurality of said fastening What'I'claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is as follows:
1. In combination with a container of the envelope variety having turned sides forming the rear face and closing flap, a metallic snap fastener serving as closing means between said rear face and said flap, one member of said fastener being attached to the rear'face of said envelope, the other member of said fastener being attached to the flap, and means attached to said last named member of said fastening means taking substantially all the tension due to resistance in separating said members of "the fastener.
2. In combination with? a container of the envelope variety having turned sides forming the rear face and closing flap, a metallic snap fastener serving as closing means between said rear face and said flap, one member of saidfastener passing through all the sides forming the rear'face and attached thereto, the other member of said fastener being attached to the flap and means attached to said last' named member of said fastening means serving as an operating handle and taking substantially allthe tension due to resistance in separating the members of the fastener. 1 3. In combination witha container of the envelope variety having a rear face and closing flap, a metallic snap ,fastener serving as closing means therefor, the male portion of said fastener assing through and attached to the rear fiice of the envelope, the female portion passing through near the edge of the flap forming-the closure'memr of said envelope, a reinforcing strip through whiclr'the neclr portion of said female portion of the fastener passes and attached thereto by upsettingthe neckportion of said female portion, said reinforcing strip extending substantially beyond the edge of the fiap'to form a handle portion.
4. In combination with a container of the envelope variety having turned sides forming the rear face and closing flap, a metallic snap forming fastener serving as closing means between said rear face and said flap, one member of said fastener passing through all the sides forming the rear face and attached'thereto, the other memberof said fastener being attached to the flap near the edge thereof, a reinforcing strip between said flap and the attaching means of the fastening member, said reinforcing strip form' an operating portion. I
