Description

R. L. DOUGLASS.
HAND STRAP. APPLICATION FILED JULY 1, 1909.
Patented Apr. 12. 1910.

entries snares ATE AND-STRAP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoswnLL LEON Douc- LASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved hand strap especially adapted to be used in railway and street cars, the object of the invention being to provide a hand strap which has fastened thereto a strip of sheet material upon which is printed or embossed advertising matter.
The object of the invention is further to provide a device of the character described in which strap with the advertising matter can be readily changed, and also the object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described in which strap with the advertising matter, while capable of being easily attached to or detached from the strap, will not be capable of injuring the hands of the passengers when they take hold of said strap.
The invention consists in a hand strap such as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hand strap. Fig. 2 is a detail section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, illustrating a modified form of my invention.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a hand strap having a loop 6 at the lower end and a loop 7 at the upper end, the intermediate portion 8 of the hand strap being formed by two thicknesses thereof 9 and 10. Any advertising matter which may be desired is printed upon the face of a piece of sheet material 11, the opposite sides of which are then preferably extended around the central portion of the strap between the two loops 6 and 7 and passed in between the two thicknesses 9 and 10 of said strap. Fasteners 12 are then passed through the sheet material 11, where it extends across the front face of the portion 10 of the strap, thence through said strap 10, thence through the two thicknesses of the sheet material which lie between the two thicknesses 9 and 10 of the strap, and the inner end. of the fastener is then clenched Specification of Letters Patent.

over upon the inner thickness of sheet material, as illustrated in Fig. 2. These fasteners may be either snap fasteners or the usual paper fastener, such as the well known McGill fastener.
If desired, the sheet material 11 which has the advertising matter thereon may be extended across the front face of the strap, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and the opposite sides then wrapped around the two thicknesses 9 and 10 of the hand strap and lapped over each other at the back of the portion 9 of said hand strap and the fasteners 12 then eX- tended through and clenched over outside the sheet material on the back face of the hand strap, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In using my improved device, the strap is suspended over a rail running longitudinally of the car in the usual manner by means of the upper loop 7, and the desired advertising matter printed upon the sheet material 11 is attached either in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 or as illustrated in Fig. 3, as may be desired. In case, however, that the sheet material 11 is fastened to the strap, as illustrated in Fig. 3, advertising matter may be placed upon the front face of said piece of sheet material and also upon the back face thereof, thus getting a double amount of advertising matter on one strap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. An improved hand strap having a loop at each end thereof, a piece of sheet material with advertising matter thereon and fasteners extending through said sheet material and adapted to fasten said sheet material to said strap intermediate said loops.
2. An improved hand-strap having a loop at each end thereof, said hand-strap between said loops being formed by two thicknesses thereof, a piece of sheet material with advertising matter thereon and fasteners eX- tending through said sheet material and one thickness of said strap and clenched between said two thicknesses thereof, whereby said sheet material is fastened to said strap intermediate said loops.
3. An improved hand strap having a loop at each end thereof, said hand-strap between said loops formed by two thicknesses thereof, a piece of sheet material with advertising matter thereon extending across the front face and longitudinally of said strap be tween said loops and having its opposite sides bent around the opposite edges of said strap and thence extending past each other and between said two thicknesses of said strap, and fasteners extending through said sheet material in the front face of said strap, through one thickness of said strap and through the two thicknesses of said sheet material and clenched between the two thicknesses of said strap, whereby said sheet material is fastened to said strap inter- 10 mediate said loops.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
