UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
URIAH MocLiNoHiE, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAND-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 659,412, dated October 9, 1,900. Application filed March 30, 1900. Serial No. 10,777. (No model.)
To (if/ZZ whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, URIAH McCLINoHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklym) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of devices known as handstraps and used in street and other railway coaches as a handheld or support for passengers who are compelled to stand; and the invention consists of the combination, with said strap, of a frame or holder or other device and means whereby it is readily attachable directly to the strap at a point between its ends and provided with a plate or card which is removably contained within the frame or holder and has printed, impressed, or affixed to it an advertising subject-matter.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of a suspended hand-strap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the attachable frame or holder.
The strap A is of any appropriate length and material, and its ends are brought together and connected to each other and to the opposite side or member in any appropriate and well-known manner to form upper and lower loops, one of which, A', receives'the usual rail or rod which extends along the upper portion of the car, while the other loop A2 hangs within easy reach of the passenger standing in the aisle and may be grasped by him to serve as a support.
This strap is provided with holes or eyelets a, which serve as a means for securing and adjusting the height thereon of the frame or holder I will now describe.` This frame or holder B is made of any desired material, as aluminium or other metal, or, preferably, leather, fabric, or other flexible material, and through its outer face is cut an opening C, which exposes the -plate or card D beneath. The frame or holder is formed with a pocket o, in which the plate or card D-is slipped edgewise, and said plate or card will contain some Vform of advertising matter. At opposite ends the frame or holder is provided with holes or eyelets E, by which said frame is attached to the strap by fasteners c c'. The
fastening devices may be studs or even rivets; but I prefer some formof pronged fastener,
which enables the frame or holder to be readily removed from one position on the strap and put into a dierent position, because of the facility with which the prongs engage the eyelets in the strap. The well-known detachable devices used for fastening sheets of paper together may be used, because of their bendable tangs, they forminga simple and convenient means for engaging and disengaging the eyelets in the upperloop of the strap, or the prongs may be embedded in or permanently secured to the frame, the operation and result obtained being the same in either instance. The upper fastener also serves to secure the card or plate in place by closing the entrance to the pocket in the frame or holder.
The device shown and described is simple and cheaply constructed, and when in place the advertising subject-matter is plainly visible and may be read without difficulty by the passengers, especially by the one whois standing and holding onto the strap. The device shown also makes it possible for me to attach the advertising feature to the straps now in use in the cars and to readily remove and replace the frame or holder without injury to or modification of said straps and to adjust said frame or holder to different vertical heights on the strap with but little difficulty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An advertising hand-strap consisting of a iiexible strap having its ends brought together and `united near its center to form two closed loops, a holder on the outer face ofthe strap between the loops and over the joint of the strap, and formed of flexible material, said holder having its greatest length in the direction of the length of the stra and having a width greater than that of the strap, the holder also having an internalV pocket with a flexible entrance in one end thereof to permit the removal and replacement of cards, and devices for detachably securing the flexible holder to the strap, one of said devices also securing the open end of the holder.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
URIAH MCCLINCI-IIE.
